Best HDD for K6 3+ on VIA MB

Post by capsndave »

I'm once again shopping for a new bit of hardware, in this case a new hard disk for my system.
This always involves a close check of all of the available reviews to get the best price / performance.

My current HDD is a IBM 22GXP on an ATA66 bus (EPOX MVP3 G5) which works great and is very reliable. I want to put this. On my PC chips VIA board with my k6 3 450.

My concern about all of new contenders is their compatibility with was is now an aging bit of hardware and CPU utilisation maybe a key factor (or perhaps it isn't, I just don't know).

I am also purchasing with a view to a future upgrade, so I am eyeing up the flagship contenders from Maxtor Western Digital and IBM.

I would be grateful for anyones feelings on these and experiences of these with K6 chips.

I read somewhere that the 120GXP falls down on performance on an ATA66 bus, so is it worth picking up a 60GXP instead?

Of course, as I have been browsing I have come across all of the concerns with regard reliability of recent IBM drive, which adds another element to the equation.

Quite simply which is the best? I'm looking for performance reliability and noise reduction in that order.

-My appreciation to all those at K6 plus. A great site which I keep coming back to. Good work lads.

D

I would avoid the IBMs given all the problems people have been having with them failing. Right now, I'm partial to WD's. I have a 30 GB ATA100 on my TX97-XE (running at ATA33) and a 40 GB ATA100 WD as a 2nd HD on my G5 (just waiting for the IBM 60GXP to fail<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> Both work fine and do NOT use much CPU according to HDTACH. They might use a little more than slower drives but that's only because they have to feed the data faster to the interface.

On some mobo's these ATA100/133 drives need to be slowed to ATA33/66 in order to function properly (otherwise DMA may not be able to be enabled) but the HD manufacturers have utilities on their support web sites for forcing UDMA modes.

Thanks for your advice George. My inclinations are towards a Western Digital. They have have just made available the 80GB WD800JB which has 8MB of cache which reviews say are the quickest drives available. There a little more expensive, but not too far out of reach.

I was tempted to risk an IBM inspite of the reports until I saw the list of 60GXP units that Dabs.co.uk are listing for resale as 'B grade' stock. All of these were described as 'warranty returns'. They're were no other brands on this list and also no 120GXP's. Of course Dabs don't indicate what the problem is and I can't imagine them selling failed drives, but it does back up the issue of reliability.

Your comments on using ATA100/133 drives as OK to use is reasuring. Thanks for that.

Regards

Dave

I had trouble with Maxtor drives and the MVP3 chipset. No problems ever with WesternDigital though. I'd say go with WD. They just seem to be more compatable with "older" hardware.

(I'm running two maxtors now 'cause their cheap & I have a different chipset).

I never had any trouble with a Maxtor ATA33 or ATA66 drive on the MVP3. I'm running an ATA66 Maxtor 92041U4 drive on my VA-503+ right now, and it ran great for years on an ATA33 91728D8 model. What it might do with an ATA100 or 133, however, I have no idea. I keep those hooked up to the Athy.

I only use Maxtors, but I haven't heard anything bad about the latest WDs.

FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

I had a 20GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 7200RPM ATA100 on an AOpen AX59 Pro (MVP3) and it ran for months without any troubles.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz@1.35GHz (9x150)
Iwill KK266
256MB Crucial PC133 CAS2 5-2-2
Gainward GeForce3 Ti200 4ns 234/530
Gateway EV910 19" monitor (1600x1200 .26mm)
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB 7200rpm
Lite-On 24/10/40 CD-RW | Asus 40x CD-ROM | Toshiba 16x DVD-ROM
Windows XP Professional

Hi Patriot,

I just got this posting. I caught your article earlier and I'll be giving it a try. My G5 has always proved stable, but un-o/c' able above 100Mhz. K6 III 550 (from Computer Adjusters). o/c's fine to 600 with Sysid.

I'm sorry to hear the rumors about Theory at computer Adjusters. I hope he's OK.

Speak to you soon

D
