Compatibility matrix: Asus P5A/A-B & AMD K6-2/3/3+

Post by astromonk »

I am looking for a site that will tell me<br>which board revisions of the Asus P5A and<br>P5A-B will work with which AMD K6-2, K6-3, K6-3+<br>processors.<br><br>I have about a dozen Asus P5A and P5A-B boards<br>with different board revs and a box of AMD K6-2,<br>K6-3, K6-3+ in varying frequencies from 350Mhz<br>to 550Mhz.<br><br>I want to know what works with what and with what<br>bios. The Asus website does not have this information<br>and I can not get a response back from Asus tech support.<br><br>I can find scattered information here and there but it<br>is questionable. Is there a definitive source for<br>this information?<br><br>A nice matrix for all board revs for both boards<br>showing what processors are supported and with<br>what BIOS revision would be nice.<br><br>Thanks<br><br>swsupport@flashmail.com <p></p><i></i>

King V has the best known compatable list for the 2+,3+<br>chips. The K6-2 should all be compatable with them boards<br>the k6-3s though are not always compatable do to power<br>consumption.<br>If CAOA is still on line there was a list there too.<br>Elf<br> <p></p><i></i>

The k6-II and III are compatible with all P5A revision. The K6-II+ and III+ are only compatible with all version of P5A anterior to ver 1.05. Meaning 1.03, 1.04 will work with + but not the ones after. For best compatibility with the + CPU, use the latest beta 1.011.005 found on the deutch Asus website. <p></p><i></i>

Astro Monk here's the score as I understand it:<br><br>Revision 1.06 of the P5A and revision 1.05 of the P5AB will not function properly with ANY K62 or K63 manufactured on or after 3/2000. This includes all + series chips as well as standard K6 chips. All earlier revisions supposedly function just fine. What do you get in return if you have a late revision P5AB? Well apparently those 2 last versions of the P5 boards have newer revisions of the Ali chipset that have the caching problem fixed. So where an early revision of the P5 (assuming 512 MBs of cache) can only cache up to 128 MBs of RAM the last revision can cache a full 512MB.<br><br>Hope this helps! <br><br> <p></p><i></i>

I can vouch for this as I have a P5A-B rev 1.05 with a K6-2/ctx rated for 500Mhz and I can only get it stable up to 475Mhz.

5.0 x 95
2.2Vcore
3.5 VIO

It has ran at 500Mhz before(5.0 x 100), but it would crash randomly, especially in 3D games. Since then I've updated my BIOS (Beta 1011.005) and upgraded various parts of my system.

Went from...
Voodoo3 2000 PCI to a GeForce 4 MX 440 AGP
3.4Gb HD to a 80Gb Western Digital 8Mb SE
64Mb to 128Mb PC100 SDRAM
Blah, Blah, other stuff....

I now get Protection Faults at 500Mhz. I've tried various voltages between 2.0 and 2.4. At 2.3/2.4 it boots Windows98se up to the desktop and then I get a BSOD. I haven't tried VIO at 3.5, 3.7, 3.8, or 4.0 yet...

I found a cached german asus site using google's cache feature. It claims 6.0 x 83 and 5.0 x 100 should work on my P5A-B rev 1.05, but doesn't. I'm guessing its a BIOS thing. I believe the other versions I had were 1007 and 1010. Not sure which booted at 500mhz

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Here's the site, its the most complete list of jumper settings/revision listings for P5A-B Compatibility I've seen thus far...

It might help you...
