SCX (My at-X Box)

Work has begun on SCX. Have got most of the work done on producing another of my ducted fan twin
HDD mounts. This one is slightly different from the previous ones, in that the copper back box is shallower;
but other than that it is similar to the one in SP3.

Still to be done is create one of my inline plugs for the fans and the soldering of the fan wires into the
pins that go in the fans plug. That will complete the actual internal HDD mount.

With that done, then I have to create something for it to mount on. Have already taken the measurements and
bought a couple of suitable pieces of stainless steel, which will require cutting, drilling, and bending to fabricate
the mounting point for the HDD mount.

When that is complete, the next step will be to take the measurements needed to fabricate the duct which will
vent the warmed air out of the back of the machine. Making that is going to be the hard part.

After that, it is a simple matter of putting together 3 separate dust filters, 1 for each of the 3 inward blowing fans
the machine will have; then tossing it all together.

Have finished doing the Main HDD mount for "The X-Box" By which I mean the ducted fan mount which
holds the 2 internal storage drives. Since Maxtor is no longer a player, It houses 2x 200 Gig Samsung Sata
drives which I figure ought to be enough; given that the machine will have a third 200 Gig Samsung Sata Drive
for the Boot Drive operating in a Vantec Sata hot swap tray, as well as a Vantec IDE hot swap tray for mass
importing data from other machines. Add to all that a fourth 200 Gig Sata Samsung kept in reserve for the Boot
Drive hot swap tray in the event of problems; and this machine ought to be fairly reliable.

Have now finished the "mount" for the clipin twin HDD pack. Took longer than expected because I have been
busy with other things; and it proved to be a lot of work. Minor bonus was I also got the front chassis fan dust
filter retainer setup done since it uses mounting bolts that are shared with the HDD Mount.

I would note that this is a rather cheap case, (it only cost me $25.00), so its features are kind of rudimentary.
I am in the process of modding it so as to include HDD cooling; and am also planning on modding it so that
the front panel is clipon. Fortunately I have a number of "ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY", (AT), parts which are
suitable for "Upgrading" this lowly "ATX".

K, The mount is made from 65/1000 inch aluminum stock. It bolts both to the front of the case; and the bottom
of the 5.25 inch bays. The part that the HDD pack clips to, (the black thing), is an "ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY",
(AT), part salvaged during one of my dumpster diving sessions.

The Front chassis fan lives inside the mount that the HDD pack attaches to.

Said fan is a 90mm Thermaltake blue LED fan w/ both temperature sensing automatic speed control;
and a user adjustable speed contol.

The original HDD mount was in the same location; but had the HDDs mounted crosswise, (Latterally), and
had provision for 1 clipin drive, and 1 bolt in; with no provisions for cooling whatsoever.

As for the Dust Filter setup, it is the same as the ones on SuperPuppy3 & SuperPuppy2. I haven't made the
actual filter yet; but the fine screen filter retainer, another "ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY", (AT), part has had
its retaining strips made and mounted. These mount by way of the same bolts that secure the HDD mounting
point to the front of the case.

With apologies for the lousy photography; but I find my webcam VERY difficult to get decent pictures with.

The stupid thing has what I call a "Focus Lock", which is to say whenever a picture is perfectly focused, it
FREEZES, so you can't move the camera to centre the picture, within the frame. You have to exit the program
and start over. Center the picture first, then TRY and keep it centred while you adjust the focus. Lighting is
also a problem Hateful thing.

By the way, I have a number of these "Fine Mesh" front chassis fan grills which are capable of holding dust
filters if anyone wants one. To slide them out from under the side mounted retainers, (which are
permanently bolted to the case), all you have to do is unscrew 1 machine screw at the bottom.

Next comes the "DUCT".

Have been hacking away at creating the design for the HDD duct for SPX. Almost done now. Will have to get it professionally made, as the design is too complex for me to create from metal myself.

Building a 2.4 Gig quad core machine with 4 HDDs, 2 DVD Writers, and 4 Gig of RAM. 2 of the HDDs, (Shown),
are permanent, the other two are removable. 3 of the 4 are SATA drives, with the boot drive being removable.
(Have spare in case of problems). The other removable drive is an IDE drive. 1 of the DVD writers is SATA,
the other is IDE. Since high speed HDDs run VERY HOT, (up to 77 C in my experience), I make it a practice to
design "Ducted Fan" cooling setups for them in my machines. In ATs that is easy because the cases I use have
the HDDs at the top at the back. ATXs, (ATs gone, X= wrong), however have the HDDs in the worst possible
place for cooling, - bottom front. You either have to cool them with the front chassis fan, providing nice warm
air for everything else in the machine, OR design a very complicated DUCT so HDD cooling fans can exit
the hot air via the back of the machine where it doesn't get drawn back in by the front chassis fan.

Well I got the HDD Duct designed, and tried to find a place to make it. First two places said it was too
complicated for them, and the third place said they could do it; but apparently I offended the guy in
charge there, by saying his drawing was a "bit rough", so they ceased communication. The following
diagrams are what I wanted made.

SOoo, I had to redesign it to make it easier to make. That had one advantage, and one disadvantage.
The disadvantage was the duct would have to be external. i.e. instead of being inside the machine running to
the back of the case, the new duct design is ouside the machine, underneath it, making the machine
3/8 of an inch taller. Which means I am going to have to raise the book shelf it will be going under. The
advantage is, the duct will no longer be blocking one of the PCI slots. Haven't done the new diagrams yet.
That is the next step.

Well I got the new designs for the ductwork done; but none of the metal fabricating shops I tried wanted to
touch the job ! I am going to have to do it myself ! How disgusting that so called "Professionals" are unwilling
to attempt a job in their chosen field; and prefer to let an amateur handle the task himself ! Have come to the
conclusion that the word "Canada" is derived from two other words. One being the Scottish word "Ken", which
means "Know"; and the other being the Spanish word "Nada", which means "Nothing".

Work has resumed on SPX after a delay of MONTHS, spent trying to get someone to professionally make the
ductwork required. Got the frame parts for the front chassis fan dust filter made tonight. Will start work on the
ductwork this weekend.

Made another air filter frame set last night. 2 down one to go. This thing is gonna have 3 fans blowing inwards so I
want dust filters for each of them.

Got the frames made for the final dust filter tonight. Still have to make the filters; but when that's done
will post pics of them. This thing is going to windup having quite a few AT parts in it. Amazing, but in so
many ways they were better designed than ATXs.

First The retainer for the front chassis fan filter. - (90 mm Blue Led Thermaltake Smart case fan,
with both automatic speed control via temperature detection, and user adjustable speed control.

Then the "retainer" with the filter installed. Frame is two layers of 60 thou plastic, with a slightly stretched piece
of Ladies pantyhose glued between said layers.

Then the "Processor Duct" filter.

Then finally the filter for the 120 mm Blue Led Thermaltake smart case fan with both automatic temperature
controlled speed control; and user adjustable speed control.

The Processor Fan, and those two chassis fans are the only inward blowing fans the machine has.
Outward blowing fans don't need dust filters, and in terms of "Outward Blowing Fans" the machine has the
powersupply fan, another 90 mm Blue Led Thermaltake smart chassis fan, same as other one, and
4 x Socket 7 fans Associated with HDD cooling setups that blow air OUT of the machine.

The plan was to have more "Fan Power" blowing air in than out thus giving the machine a slight positive air
pressure. That way all air entering the machine can be filtered. Any air leakage will be air going OUT
because of positive pressure. So the only way DUST can get in, is by going through the filters.

Have made the second and third parts of the HDD Duct assembly. The three parts made thus far have been
assembled and installed in the case. This completes the internal part of the duct setup, with the rest being a
low flat tray under the machine, which carries the air used to cool the drives to the back of the machine
where it is exhausted. Still gotta make the tray, which will be hard for different reasons. (The guage of the
metal is a fair bit heavier that that of the internal duct, so it is going to be harder to bend to the proper shape.)
The internal duct was hard because there is very little room for it and the parts had to be made perfectly in order
for it to fit in the space there is, AND have the HDD pack capeable of sliding sideways into it. GOT IT JUST RIGHT !!

With the HDD Pack slid into its mount it looks like this :

Unfortunately the exit point for the air from the "Fan Duct" is immediately adjacent to the air intake point for the front chassis fan.

The top slot in these photos is the "Fan Duct" air exit point. The bottom slot is the Front Chassis Fan "Intake Point".

For this reason, (plus there are a bunch of "Convection Currant" cooling holes in the bottom of the case,
- see next photo), I have to : 1) cover the bottom of the case with a flat sheet of metal to seal those holes
so the air from the HDD cooling setup doesn't get back into the case through said holes; and 2) Make a
tray which separates the "Front Chassis Fan Slot" from the "HDD Cooling Duct Slot" and guides the HDD Duct
air out the back of the machine.

Here it is with the tray installed; the black thing you see is a strip of electrical tape that I used to seal the crack
line where the tray bolts onto the bottom of the case.

Right now am working on converting the front panel from "bolt on" to "clip on" Fortunately, I have
the requizite "Advanced Technology", (AT) parts to do the necessary conversion of this lowly "ATX".
(All long since done. this is now my main machine.)
