I don't have any experience with K6Speed, but I'm sure some others will jump in here with some suggestions...

dump that program and use Rob Muller's
CTU (aka) central tweakin unit

it sounds to me like you probably need to remove
DEVICE=C<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE from config sys.
note: I don't beleave the K6-2 supports that feature i think WC only works for the K6-III.

you need to check the K6-2 documentation to be sure.
if thats what your using.

Getting Write combining to work

Post by bfollett »

Hi, I know this thread is a bit out of date, so I'm not sure the author will even see this response... I just got Write Combining to work on my system, but it involved using a couple of different programs. First, I'm on Win 98 so a XP user might not be as lucky because I know some of these utilities don't work on XP(yet). Here's what I found:
K6Speed can enable write combining, but does not let you set the MTTR0 and MTTR1 memory ranges, so most likely you will not be write combining to the correct area of memory for your video card. CTU(Central Tweaking Unit) allows you to set the MTTR0 and MTTR1 memory ranges, but gives you no help on what values should be set or even how to get that info. SetK6.exe was the final piece of puzzle. If you run SetK6 at a MSDos command prompt with no parameters, it will display MTTR0 and MTTR1 addresses that it queries from your video card. From that I found my MTTR0 and MTTR1 memory addresses were at E0000000 and D0000000. I then went back to CTU and plugged those values in. Happily I saw a sizable increase in video performance. Playing around further, I found that I only had to set the E0000000 address for the performance boost. As for the size of the memory range, I left it at the 16 megs. Because that seemed to be sort of a default, however, anything 1 meg or over seemed to show the same performance boost.

Hopes this helps someone else.

bfollett,

Nice post.

I didn't experiment with it that much. I allowed CPUCool to set the combining up for my V4 4500, then let CTU set it at boot everytime. But the GeForces either had no performance gain with Write Combining set, or were unstable.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... eorgep1 at: 2/25/03 8:53:13 pm
