Browsing again, this time with Phoenix 0.5

Post by His Royal Majesty King V »

Well, I shoulda kept my mouth shut about how Opera was doing the first few days.

Ran into more problems, then stability issues. Got some other things to work right though.

But the stability problems were bothering me. So I figured a few people mentioned and recommended Phoenix. Thus I downloaded version 0.5

Seems pretty good so far, though I've only used it very briefly. Only weirdness I've run into so far is:

1) In this text window I'm typing in right now, the cursor blinks blindingly fast.

2) I have no idea how/why plugins and such are working. Doesn't seem to be in preferences.

3) I have no idea how/why this thing knows what to do with extensions and mime types. Also doesn't seem to be in preferences.

Remains to be seen how this thing handles stuff in the long run.

I'll give Opera credit for making a browser with mail client and newsreader that fits in a 3.25MB download. Phoenix is a bit bigger, browser only at 6MB.

Still, if everything works, and Phoenix is as resource-light as I've heard, I'll probably be weaned off of Opera.

Wonder how this browser would run on a 486? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

I haven't tried Phoenix, but been tempted. I've been sticking with Mozilla, now up to 1.3, and it's very nice (updated frequently, pop-up blocking, and a good spam filter). It does take more resources than Phoenix though.

The cursor in the text window blinks very fast on mine as well. Anything based on Mozilla I guess. But if you Hide the emoticons, it goes back to normal blinking.
Epox MVP3G5, K6-3+450@618, 256MB SDRAM, CL GF2 GTS, IBM 60GXP 20GB, Fortissimo II Sound

ASUS TX97-XE, K6-3+450@500, 256MB SDRAM, Voodoo4 4500 PCI, WD 40GB, SB AWE64 Sound

ASUS A7N8X Dlx, Athlon XP 2400+, 512 Crucial DDR, Radeon 8500, WD 80GB SE, onboard sound/LAN

You're right, same thing here with the cursor blink speed and the emoticons shown vs hidden.

Since Phoenix from what I've read is based on the Mozilla core, it should work similarly. I'm sure there's differences, but I haven't tried Mozilla since 1.01.

In any case, as I like to do my emailing separately, without using the web-browser, Phoenix works for me. Newsgroups have been a non-issue thus far, but if I ever get into using them again (haven't done so since 1996), I'll probably just get a separate program for it.
--------------------
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 450AFX @ 500 2.2V

Acer Quasi-proprietary Mid-Tower with P-II 266
