i need help..

Post by tchelo » Mon Nov 29, 2004 3:55 pm

I have a compaq computer (yeah, i know it sucks, but my dad is who bought =[ ), and about my mobo i just know the chipset (mvp4). I have a tnt2 pci too, but the real bottleneck in my system is my processor, k6-2 533. I have 256 ram.
And i need to find a way to improve my performance in games, cause i´ve tried to run max paine but it becomes really slow..
i´ve tried a lot of drivers, and anyone fit here...

So, im needing sugestions about how to tweak my chipset, my processor, and things like..

Thanks.
tchelo.

If you bump the processor voltage from 2.2v to 2.3v, you can clock your 533 up to 550, for what little that is worth. To get a signifigant improvement in speed, you will have to find either a K6-2+ or a K6-3+ processor, or get a newer machine.

Max Payne will absolutely kill your system, and I'm not sure even a K6-III+ would help much. If you have a TNT2 PCI, it's probably a TNT2 m64 PCI which has only 64 bit memory bandwidth which really cripples the cards as well. May Payne is likely just too much for that system.
E-Machines T6000 (AMD64 3200+) (Don't laugh! It absolutely rocks!)
GigaByte K7N400 Pro2, 3200+, 1 GB DDR, 80 GB WD SE
Epox MVPG5, K6-III+@550, 384 SDRAM, 80 GB WD SE
TX97-XE, K6-III+@400, 256 SDRAM, 40 GB WD HD

i ran max payne on a k63+at 575mhz however i did it with a geforce 2 mx

I really dont like your chances of running it with any form of tnt card. :(

Probably the best/cheapest bet for that system would be to get a Voodoo3 PCI card cheap on ebay.

Minimum requirements for Max Payne are WAY too much...

I really wouldn't count on it being all that playable even if you could really overclock a K6-III+ through the roof.

From the maxpayne.com website:

MINIMUM SPECS:
---------------------
1Ghz PIII/Athlon or 1.2Ghz Celeron/Duron processor
32MB AGP graphics card with hardware transform & lighting support
256MB RAM
1.5 GB hard drive space
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
DirectX 9.0
Keyboard and mouse

RECOMMENDED SPECS:
------------------------------
1.4Ghz Athlon or 1.7 Ghz Pentium 4, Celeron or Duron processor
64MB DirectX 9 compatible AGP graphics card with hardware T&L support
512MB RAM
1.5 GB hard drive space
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
DirectX 9.0
Keyboard and mouse

Transform and Lighting requirement implies to me at least a Radeon or a GeForce, if I remember right. If you don't have T&L, I don't know if Max Payne tries to emulate it in software or not, but if it does, it'll really tax the CPU a lot further than normal.

Hmm, I believe those requirements are for Max Payne 2, not the original.

D'oh!!!

You're right.

Here's what I've now found after a somewhat more careful search, for Max Payne:

Minimum Requirements:
-------------------------------
450MHz AMD / Intel Processor
96 MB RAM
16MB Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card

Recommended System:
------------------------------
700 MHz AMD / Intel Processor
128 MB RAM
32 MB Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card

Generic requirements:
-----------------------------
DirectX 8.0
DirectSound compatible sound card

Okay, so I was WAY off on that other list of specs. So I guess it technically SHOULD run okay on a K6-2 or better system that's got enough CPU cycles to throw at it. Of course, I don't know what they consider acceptable for the minimum requirements they come up with.

I guess Super_Relay's recommendation of a GeForce or later generation card is a good idea.

Though, I have to ask, does it play reasonably well at 575Mhz with the GeForce?
