RAM nifications

Post by DonPedro » Thu May 18, 2006 9:13 am

Today I got hold of a 512MB ram stick (Kingston ValueRAM, KVR133X64C2/512).

inspired by some success stories of using such a stick in ss7-systems, I gave it a try in an ali-5 gigabyte ga-5ax 5.2 mainboard.

to my disappointment the system did not start beyond counting the size of the ram. to my surprise it counted until 1.024.something, in other words to 1Gigabyte!!

the stick is doublesided and carries 8 chips on each side (infineon HYB39S256800DT-7).

anybody there who could give an educated explanation for this?

Hey Don, you've stumbled across the problem I had, with my other stick of 512 MB ram. When installed by itself, the Gigabyte board would Count to 1024 and freeze. As it was mentioned in my thread, a 512Mbit specification has to be used in the 1 slot, so the chipset does not double the ram and freeze. Alas, it is steep to find such modules.

ok,
but since I am not familiar with ram technicalese could you tell me what is the to-work-or-not-to-work technical "feature" of a ram stick to look for?

when I read technical descriptions of ram sticks I a) never read about e.g. "512Mbit" things or alike, but always b) something like "32x64" or so.

could you (again?) post what is written (on the sticker) on the 512mb ram stick you are successfully using? with thtat help I maybe can dig more into this.
