trouble getting ali5+agp+cache+win2000 working together

Post by noshutdown »

board is 5ax v5.2
cpu is k6-2+ running 100*5.5

for nv cards(i tried geforce256 and geforce2mx), drivers<=23.11 refuses to enable agp mode and runs in pci mode only. using newer drivers(i tried 28.32 and 30.82), i can force agp mode on with the "enablealiagp" registry edit, but must disable onboard cache or i get bsod at loading windows. even with onboard cache disabled, there are still frequent crashes in 3d games and benchmarks. and opengl icd always stop responding whenever you access it, even including checking opengl icd info in everest.

then i turned to ati cards(tried rage128 and rage128pro), which gave just slight less trouble, agp mode is on by default and no bsod at loading windows. but then again i have to disable onboard cache, or it would crash(screen goes all black) in 3d games and benchmarks.

anyone experience on this? is there any tweaks i can do to?

I used to use an ATI 7500 All in Wonder with my ASUS P5A-B, though I don't know how that compares with a Rage 128, and though I initially had problems because of memory conflicts, once that got sorted out it never gave me problems, though I am not a gamer. Also I always had my cache enabled. Not familiar with the 5ax v5.2 what sort of board is that ?

no doubt 7500 is far superior to the rage128pro. i have a 7500 at hand too and i may give it a try but guess it wouldn't be much difference.

and on what os did you have no problem? i would't doubt if it was in 98, or as long as you don't do heavy game benchmarks.

Yes it was 98SE with the "Unofficial Sevice Pack" installed. Other thing is what drivers you are using. Don't use the latest ones. I'll have to hookup my 98SE ASUS P5A-B Machine to find out what drivers I used. If you want, I can do that for you.

what os are you having trouble with?
what bios version are you using?

edit: ok, I just realized os is windows 2000

just when i am about to give up, the problem mystically vanished... at least with the current rage128pro card. probably due to a certain agp driver version, current is 1.91. i tried 1.82, 2.00, 2.11 etc before and none worked, and i supposed they are all no help to the old 1541 chipset.
anyway enabling onboard cache does give me some small boost, but cuts in memory speed.
