Has everyone got cacheman 4.1?

Post by spirits247 »

It recently occurred to me that not everyone is running cacheman 4.1 which includes a new setting for "Read Ahead Threshold" - the setting in windows that is normally fixed at a 64K limit. You can increase it all the way up to 512K for increased performance when using single applications. Here is a description from the actual program:

"This slider changes the amount of additional bytes that will be read when a application reads data in sequence. It is meant to improve read performance by anticipating the next read. This works in many cases, unfortunately the performance will decrease if more than one application accesses the hard drive at the same time." [cacheman help file, 2001]

Although many of you prefer to set the cacheman settings manually in the registry (min, max vcache ect), either some of the settings on offer may have been overlooked or the shear convenience of this application might appeal to even hardened tweakers.

The usefulness of this program can't be denied, especially to newbies, and for this reason I think we should include a link in the download section and a detailed article describing the benefit of the settings on offer. Here is the link:

Cacheman 4.1

Deanodarlo transformed into Spirits247. Nice catch, spirits247.

I too recommended Cacheman 4.1 - the "Read Ahead Threshold" is one of many nice tweak options that are easy to try thanks to this program.

Cacheman 5 is out there now. Can't remember where I got it from though. Has a couple more features, but doesn't seem to have the presets that the other one does.
Revhead
AMD K6-III+450@600Mhz (6x100) 2.1v SuperPower SP-A586B mobo; ALI Aladdin V, 512K L3, Award 4.51PG, 256M PC133 (C2), AGP 2X 1.80, GeForce2MX 400 32M D3 8.05 (225/172), FOP32, W98SE.
Also stock K62-400 Compaq Presario 1685 notebook.

I used cacheman for a while, but I couldn't actually feel any noticable performance difference & i often suspected it in weird random crashes... tho that may have just been win98. what does it DO for you that you notice?

I recently installed Crashman 5.1 www.pcnineoneone. I don't think it was Win98(SE) that found it disagreeable but rather Norton S/W. Norton, it seems is a jealous mistress- it didn't like "Tiny Trojan Trap" either. Anyway I had to uninstall (not easy) and I've gone to MaxMem and Cache Booster from AnalogX. These are elegant little programs.
