having trouble enabling AGP texturing in direct-x

Post by brew ii »

I recently installed a radeon board and began tweaking/oc'ing it. I noticed in the texture tests in 3dmark2000 that with 32 & 64 meg textures, my old tnt2-ultra would spank it in fps. I then discovered that in DXDIAG, AGP texturing is listed as unavailable.

I located the ATIGART driver and removed it and attempted to install the via agp driver from the 4-in-1 rev 4.32 drivers, but this did not fix the problem. I'm currently running DX 8.1. I've tried installing in standard mode, turbo mode, the agp driver by itself and with the whole 4-in-1 set, in safe mode and after a normal boot.

Anyone have any ideas?

Agp Texturing does not work on a Socket 7 System with the current Radeon dirvers. I have the problem also.

Thanks for the info, I was starting to go crazy wondering what the hell I was doing wrong.

Then the next question is, what kind of performance hit do we take without having this enabled?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... rewii>brew ii at: 8/5/01 6:10:31 pm

I don't think much of a performance hit if any. Agp Texturing is Very slow so it does not help all that much.

Alright, then just one more question, then I'll drop this issue. Back in my first post I talked about my old tnt2-ultra performing so much better in the 3dmark 32 & 64 meg texture tests. Assuming that you have run this test, what were your results? Mine are as follows:

tnt2 137 fps (32) 76 (64)
radeon 63.5 1.5

I know benchmarking results doesn't always translate over to real game results, but I just assumed that it would do better than it does.

Thanks for your info

It does have a performance hit. Note the two highest radeon DDR scores (by a lot) in 3DMark2001 with a K6-3 are running Win2K. One of those is only running at 450 Mhz on his K6-3! In Win2K, AGP texturing works works with the Radeon.

I have a very fast system. Despite that, the best I could do running at 618 mhz with a Radeon DDR 32 MB in Win98se was 1100 something (189/189 core/mem).

Disabling AGP texture acceleration on my GeForce cuts over 300 points off my GeForce score in 3DMark2001 and over 1500 points off my score in 3DMark2K.

Wow whats up with that I always thought that AGP texturing was one of the big advantages of AGP..fast access to main memory and all that. Also with out the texturing working then why do we go through all this trouble with GART drivers when they're not even being used. Super lame.

Alright then, anyone have any idea on getting it enabled?

For reference, the best 3dmark2000 score I've gotten is 2901 and for 2001 - 960 (both running default tests). Sys rig: k6-3+ 450 @ 560, 256 ram and radeon LE @ 195 mem/core. Course these were both obtained with agp texturing disabled.

I had it enabled at one time when I reformatted my Harddrive, installed the Via 4in1, then installed the driver on the cd. After I installed newer drivers though it was disabled again.

you may have seen this already, but georgep posted a link to a rage3d thread about this very issue. Looks like its a ss7-98se driver issue like you mentioned previously.

<a href="http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread. ...

hope this link works right

Hey check this out, I just got a reply back from ATI:

There have been a number of reports of difficulties with Via Apollo MVP3 chipsets. Please go through the steps below to configure the AGP slot / display adapter combination in the best possible way.

1. Download the latest ATI display drivers, DirectX and Via 4-in-1 chipset drivers
Microsoft DirectX 8.0
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads
Microsoft DirectX 8.0 Digital Video Update
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads
VIA 4-in-1 chipset driver version 4.32
http://www.viahardware.com/download/index.shtm
ATI Display driver
http://support.ati.com/drivers/winme/wi ... 15_sp.html
ATI Multimedia Centre 7.1
http://support.ati.com/drivers/misc/mmc7_1_nodvd.html
ATI DVD Player 4.1.0.0
http://support.ati.com/drivers/misc/dvd_4_1.html
2. Restart the system and load your BIOS, press DELete key
Locate AGP Aperture size and set it to your system memory amount
Save and exit
6. Load the computer into safemode, press F8 prior to the Windows logo
7. In safemode load the Device Manager, remove any reference to ATI
8. Load the Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter,
Change the refresh rate to Adapter Default
9. Restart the system normally, cancel any new hardware found
10. Install DirectX 8.0 and the Digital Video update, restart the system
11. Load the ATI display drivers, do not restart
12. Load the Via 4-in-1 drivers, ENABLE DMA mode for all devices, set AGP mode to Standard
Do not restart
13. Use the Find function to locate ATIGART.exe rename any files to OLDGART.exe
14. Restart the system
15. Install the downloaded ATI Multimedia Centre and DVD software
16. Load MSCONFIG and set it back to Normal Startup

Regards,

Technical Support Canada
ATI Technologies, Inc.

I may try this tomorrow, if I feel up to it. Right now I have the Gainward CardExpert GEForce2MX400 with 64 MBs of RAM in there and apart from it's shitty 2d display at high resolutions its kicking ass as a gaming card. But in a week or so it will find its way into my brothers K6 system anyway..so maybe I should take it out before I get too spoiled.

Interesting. What a sequence of steps! Run a couple benches before and after and let us know how it goes. You're guinea pig #1<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Damn, wish I had checked this forum last night while I was at home, I would have liked to have tried it.

Now what should you do if you already have directx 8.0 (or higher in my case) installed? Just skip this step or attempt to reinstall which I don't think it will do?

Hate to reformat and reinstall windozes just to get this to work but it may be worth it.

Thanks for the info jonwest, hopefully this will address the problem.

Yeh I love how in these types of situations they never tell you why you're supposed to be doing all that stuff in that particular order. Seems like it would be easier just to say such and such dll id screwed up replace it with this one...but no no no noone can admit fault so we must all pretend to do some kind of voodoo ritual to get stuff working....

Anyway it doesn't look like I'll be getting to tinker with this today (it's my 30th BDay so I'm celebrating) so if anyone else wants to take a shot at it first go ahead!!
