The only backup program I use is e-Backup ($10) which backs up Outlook Express, Favorites, and the Windows Address Book. Other than that I do everything else by hand which isn't really a big deal. I'm using Windows 98 and I backup stuff maybe once a month on to Zip100 disks.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... hr>Nohr at: 8/16/01 6:36:46 am

My OS is WinME, I use Norton Ghost but don't really like it. I just ordered NovaBack today, we'll give that a try. I Backup everything on CDR (Image my System). That way, if my Hard Drive breaks, I buy a new Hard Drive, take 1 to 2 hrs to do a complete restore, and my system is back just like it was, simple, no muss no fuss. If I had to do a complete ReInstall of everything, then it would take me several days to bring my system back to the way it was. By the way, I backup every 2 weeks.

Also, this is kind of a "What works and what don't work Poll", so please let the rest of us know what you like to use.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/uazk6er.showPu ... >AZK6er at: 8/19/01 12:21:50 pm

I confess brother az, I confess all.

Got Win ME but restore is crap so removed it completely with a handy program along with other bloatware junk. In it's place I have the following backup system:

Partitions on Primary HD, 20.5G Quantum Fireball Plus AS:

SYSTEM C: Contains operating system and programs. Found on the outer part of the HD for faster performance.

Size? ~ 4Gb

Method? Used Ghost on this partition straight after installing everything. Created a bootable CDRW containing the image so I can recover without using a floppy disk.

How often? Only once. Any changes after this I will have to add manually, but I find this is more time efficient since I have yet to use the recover disk.

TEMP E: Tmp Internet Files, Temp Folder, Permanent 150Mb Swap file. Found on the outside edge of the HD for fastest access of swap file and fragmented temp directories.

Size? ~ 0.5Gb

How often? Never, it's all junk.

STORAGE F: My Docs, Games, Downloaded software, pics, porn (hehe, only joking) - generally all my data files. Last partition on the disk as performance is not as important as the other two.

Size? ~ 15Gb

Method? Use a FREE program called TaskZip to back up any folders I choose off the storage partition onto a second hard drive (see below). I also include favourites and e-mail folders for back up.

How often? Manually, usually daily. Only updates files that have changed or been added, so takes a couple of seconds!

Partitions on Secondary HD, 6.4G Fujitsu:

BACKUP D: One large partition for backing up my data using taskzip, like described above.

Method? Use CDRW's, which can be overwritten and updated, to backup folders on D:. Never use cdr's for data backup because I have enough beer mats already from them becoming obsolete.

How often? Whenever I can be bothered.

Once setup, the above method takes hardly anytime at all to implement, perhaps 15mins every couple of months if I need to update some important data on a CDRW. Using HD's for primary backup rocks n <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Deanodarlo transformed into Spirits247. I backup fairly regularly to ZIP100. I don't use the Iomega program because it's designed to sell more zip disks by archiving everything. I use a simple batch program that I wrote myself (xcopy etc).

I backup all my data, email, faxes, favorites, address book
but not the programs and system files. I also backup the registry and a few *.ini files. Basically, I back up the stuff that would be gone forever if lost.

I have too much cr4p to be able to back it all up. Critical data goes to a CD, otherwise, it'll just be that big reinstall in the sky...

hell no. i just drag important sh*t over to a partition on a different hard drive once and a while. drives are so big these days and so cheap compared to any other backup solution (i.e., overpriced POS tape drives) that i don't see the point in doing it any other way. tape is unreliable as hell anyway

I bit the bullet and bought a 20 GB SCSI tape backup. Uses those Travan TR-5 cartridges. The tape drive is by Seagate. I mounted it in an external enclosure so I can use it on my 3 different computers (all have SCSI cards). I just hook it up, start the backup program, and go away for 45 minutes or so. When I come back, it's finished.

that's very funny. my friend has the exact same tape backup setup. so far the count is two dead drives and three dead tapes.
