Nice article Mr. Toast!

The only thing I take issue with is having such a huge swap file size. Do you realy run applications or games that use extensive VRAM? I run the usual office type apps and my computer almost never SWAPs -this is with only 96 MB of physical RAM. I view the swap file as only useful incase of RAM failure; perhaps this is because of the apps I run.

Finally, I have a question about partitioning. I would like to partition my hard drive as you suggested. Will I have to reformat and reinstal or can I do this on the fly? Does this depend on the partitioning program I use?

Thanks,
DrBob

I have my virtual memory set very high, but only because I do occasionally work with multiple 1270 dpi photoshop documents that get into the 270MB range each. So it is just easier for me to set my swap file to a very large value that I know the system won't exceed.

300 MB should be sufficient for most systems with 256K, but I am awaiting other informed opinions on this subject.

As for partitioning, each time I have partitioned my various drives, I have pretty much had to start from scratch on that drive. I do have a smaller drive I have used to copy the old C: drive onto (and then copy it back onto the new drive) once or twice.

Maybe there are some others out there who are more experienced with partitioning that may know a non-destructive way to do this...
My sig

I usually set my swap file to 192MB, I currently have 256MB of memory. I don't really see the need for more than that unless you do some type of video editing or whatever.

As for non-destructive partioning I believe Partition Magic will do that. However it does cost $70. You can find it here: <a href="http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagi ...

Very good article Mr. Toast.

I am now thinking of doing you're Partitioning scheme on my system as it makes alot of sense to do it that way (I am currently running 2 partitions on my 30G Western Digital ATA100, 10G for Windows ME & Drivers and 20G for Applications).

I run a 256M Swap file and have 256M PC100 ECC Ram because I have found that Some Apps. want to see a Swap File (even if it is not used) or for some reason they don't run correctly (i.e. my scanner software).

Good article . .

A couple of differences that I'd heard here and there . . though I don't know how accurate it is . . .

I've heard that for Win9x based systems, swapfile size should be 2-1/2 times actual RAM size, as you stated, with the following exceptions:

1) You probably don't want to go below 64MB swapfile size even if you have very little RAM.

2) There's never a need to go over 256MB swapfile size with Win9x based systems.

Another one I'd been told is that the swapfile being put on a non-C: partition is that this will hurt performance. What I'd been told the best thing to do is to:
1) Format C:
2) Install Windows, and all necessary drivers.
3) Set swapfile size to ZERO
4) Defragment the drive
5) Set your "correct" swapfile size, and have it on Drive C:
6) Go forth and play!

The idea being that C and all the stuff first installed will be more quickly accessible than if further outward on the drive. Or so I've been told, I don't know how accurate this actually is.

Ooohh . . I also found out that under FAT16 (I don't recall if it also happens with FAT32), if you have many partitions (7 or more, or maybe it's 9 or more) . . that when the scandisk first runs in DOS before it prepares to install the OS, It will hang around drive I, or J or somesuch. Somewhere up there.....

Hope this extra info is useful.

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III+ 450 @ 600 2.0V
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 2.0V
ECS P5SD-B ver 1.1, K6-III 333 @ 366 2.2V
Asus SP97-V rev 1.02, K6-2 400
Micron Millenia Plus Desktop PC with Intel P133
Others parts which may become a complete PC someday.
