video card hell with a amd k6-2

Post by PANTS jamsan »

well i have an amd k6-2 550, and i have tried the three video cards, tnt2 m64 pci, geforce 2 mx 400 pci, and a voodoo 3 3000 pci....and they all do well rather poorly in games like CS....well i was wondering if any of you knew how to get my performance up without having to buy a new mobo or cpu (beacuse i have no cash)....i thought i would be gettin more than 20 fps with a geforce 2, but i guess not.....but now i use a voodoo 3 3000, and its not too badi must say...i get like 10-30 steady....peaking at like 80 when im alone on screen.......anyone with anythouhgs?? i have a compaq mobo (sorry) so new doh on overclocking.....thanx in advance .....also is it possible to put a so called amd k6-2+ or k63+ chip in my comp....i believe i have a via mvp4 vt 8501 i think i can double check that when i get home but im pretty sure thats the chipset for my mobo.....

your problem is your processor. either get a k6-x+ chip or a socketA (which makes more $$$ sense these days). you video card is NOT the problem.

Even at 550 MHz and with a GeForce2, a K6-2 isn't a very good gaming platform anymore. The L2 cache problem cripples it too badly.

If you can find a cheap K6-2+ or K6-III for your system, that's the way to go. Unfortunately, you can't just swap in a new motherboard on a Compaq. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

If you can't afford even that, try overclocking the Voodoo3. It's no unusual to see them clock up to 200 MHz, and the V3 GPU scales well with clock speed.

FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)
