Can't eliminate error msg:configmg W/O disabling ext cache

Post by supremedc »

thanks to georgep1 for your link to ms support. It & some tweaking got win98 setup & running, but I still can't get rid of that initializing device configmg error unless I disable external cache.
I reflashed the bios again, installed the 4.34 4-in-1 patches, disabled 32 bit protected mode drivers in control panel\system, & win won't start in normal mode unless the ext cache is disabled.

System:Fic 503+ board, JE439 bios, default settings used, win
98 (oem, full version, not SE). K62-500, GF2 32mb video, 64mb PC100 ram, 6gb udma 66 segate HD, TDK 10/32/12 burner. I left all other hardware out until the basic system is stable.

MS suggests either disabling the ext cache or putting in a PCI video card. In your dreams!! I don't plan on using a crippled system indefinitely.
Is there a workaround to this?
Help! Appreciate any advice out there.
hotmail me at: vabrams@jps.net
or leave message here.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/usupremedc.sho ... premedc at: 11/13/01 4:18:43 pm

Can you try it with another video card? You also might want to check this out, even though it says it's for another motherboard:

<a href="http://support.microsoft.com/support/wi ...

E-Machines T6000 (AMD64 3200+) (Don't laugh! It absolutely rocks!)
GigaByte K7N400 Pro2, 3200+, 1 GB DDR, 80 GB WD SE
Epox MVPG5, K6-III+@550, 384 SDRAM, 80 GB WD SE
TX97-XE, K6-III+@400, 256 SDRAM, 40 GB WD HD

Re: Win98 won't recognize GF2 card-Part 2 of install woes

Post by supremedc »

TO Georgep1:
thanks, we're making progress, but still frustrated.
I let my microsoft hostility keep me from going to their support site. Very shortsighted. That's what prejudice gets you.
After I got into windows 98 in normal mode & all the setup sequences completed, I installed the VIA 4in1 patches, & then tried to install the GF2 drivers. The nividia setup stated, but then stopped when it couldn't even recognize the video card. What is that all about? Plus there are yellow markers on the cdrom, hard drive, floppy drive, and a few other places in device manager.
I reflashed the bios ( it was allready latest). Nothing.
I don't know if this is a bios setting or a windows problem.
Why is this so damn hard to set up? My old intel 430 tx board was kindergarden simple compared with this 503+ board.
Hope you or someone has additional leads.
