Hi, sure. That chip can be overclocked with a mouse click. Dig around on this site & get a copy of K6speed. note you MUST install it as "ADMINISTRATOR" to get it to work right. Then just push the chip to 500Mhz & see if your divx plays OK then. at only 500Mhz i doubt it will run too hot. if you start getting weird errors, video artifacts, audio squacks, or blue screens, you will know that you are overheating the chip.

since your are in a laptop cooling situation, i recommend you don't push the chip past 500.

Works on my 1670

Post by dgoodrich »

I have a 1670, which is a very similar machine. I run a K6-3+ 450 at 550 all the time and it is completely stable. It is unstable at 600 however.

You can use K6speed to test it out, but if it works, you can also set the dip switches directly if you want. Here is a site that shows the dip switch settings:

<a href="http://www.mgrudkin.clara.net/Presario. ...

sysid is much easyer to use and it does not need a restart, no funky settings. Just set it and forget it... damn I need to lay off the late night info ads

Sysid also eats up a meg of your HD for no worthwhile reason. Just my 2cents worth. K6speed is a whopping 35k.

Don't be dissin' my efforts blue, a restart is a minor thing when it comes to free programs. And, in the "for what it's worth" category, the sysid driver caused problems on my system more than once due to an i/o conflict, and you won't see such a problem with k6speed since the code is written so the driver won't cause an I/O or MEM conflict.
Best regards,Kyle

What I can never get my head around is this.
A 450 and 550Mhz chips are physically the same, just that the 550 happens to perform better when it is tested at the binning stage - so it gets a 550 stamp.
Why then would a laptop have problems running a 550 compared to a 450 overclocked to 550? Surely they would produce the same amount of heat?
Any takers?

RevheadMorgan1.2G, K7S5A, Coolmaster EP5-6151, 256DDR2700, 40G 100/7200, Kyro264M, Fortissimo II, W98SE.K6-III+450@600(6x100) 2.1v, FOP32, SP-A586B, 256M PC133, 20G 100/7200, GeForce2MX40032M, Vibra128, W2K/W98SEK62-400 Presario 1685 notebook.

No. The 550 may still put out much more heat, but maintain stability.
