Finally - got it - K6-III 400 MHz :-)

Post by nk »

Lucky me - after months of watching the local auctions, i got a K6-III AHX 2.4V
YEAH
My mobo needed bios patching with the patcher from www.rom.by, but now it is completely OK. And more memory is waiting to be plugged in my system

Still too chicken to overclock, but soon...

Keepin' k6'ing... :banana

I have one of those that is nicely de-capped to boot , barely can over clock it even 10% , do not be discouraged of the lack of results that you may end up with.

Of course this depends on the other components used ..mainly the M.B. ..

Umm, there are success stories:

http://efisher.web.wesleyan.edu/overclocking.html

Quoting: "I purchased a K6-III 400 AHX. This was one mean chip and would run at 450@2.2VCORe (.2V less than default!) and would even run at 500 fairly easily and very stabily."

My K6-III AHX runs pretty cool, for my (good) surprise. I even did'n put thermal paste, the heatsink and cpu surfaces were really flat and i decided to not put thermal paste.

AX59pro

I have a k6-III (2.4v) on an Aopen AX59pro (Tnt2, 128meg). It's really solid, but I can't overclock it at all reliably.

At first time, i will OC it just with 3% (400 -> 413 , 75x5.5). Faster FSB and 13 MHz more on the L2 cache will worth, i guess.

My CPU runs noticeable cool - even after hours of divx playing. The heatsink is somewhat warm, but definitely not hot. I wonder if there is big air gap between the cpu and heatsink, but in this case, the CPU will overheat and hang really fast, wright ? It runs rock stable for now.

Clocking k6-III

Post by stevenaaus »

Overclocking your box to 75*5.5 would probably give you a decent speed-up, if your cpu can handle it. (I already have a 100MHz FSB, and slowing that down is just not worth it. )

Yes, an air gap between the heatsink and the processor is definately bad news.

.....I did mess around with a ga586s2 once. I ~think~ it was unusual in allowing similtaneous use of EDO and SDRAM, but for me this was fairly unstable. - With 256Meg SDRAM, you obviously don't need this.

I overclocked my ga586s2 /pentium200 to 3*75 = 225 and sold it cheaply to a friend. Hate to say it, but those MMX pentiums are great overclockers.
