Benchmarks...

Post by punkrawker82 »

I used a helpful, little utility I had lying around on my hard drive called AIDA32 v3.85...

It had other features that can tell you everything about your comp, but I used the "Mem Read" and "Mem Write" benchmarks. I like it because it posts other results from many different configurations.

Read as: CPU/Speed, Motherboard, Chipset, RAM, Score in MB/s

My results were:
-----------------------

Mem Write:
---------------
PII-266 Intel DK440LX i440LX PC66 SDRAM 120 MB/s
K6-III-450 Asus P5A ALADDiN5 PC100 SDRAM 120 MB/s
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
K6-2/cxt @ 500Mhz Asus P5A-B ALADDiN5 PC100 SDRAM 115 MB/s
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PentiumMMX-166 Asus TX97-E i430TX PC66 SDRAM 90 MB/s
K6-2-450 Gigabyte GA-5AX ALADDiN5 PC100 SDRAM 80 MB/s
K6-266 Asus SP97-V SiS5598 Int. 66 MHz EDO RAM 40 MB/s

Mem Read:
---------------
Celeron-466A IBM 628848U i810 Int. PC66 SDRAM 390 MB/s
PII-266 Intel DK440LX i440LX PC66 SDRAM 350 MB/s
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
K6-2/cxt @ 500Mhz Asus P5A-B ALADDiN5 PC100 SDRAM 329 MB/s
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
K6-III-450 Asus P5A ALADDiN5 PC100 SDRAM 290 MB/s
K6-2-450 Gigabyte GA-5AX ALADDiN5 PC100 SDRAM 260 MB/s
C3-800 VIA EPIA PLE133 PC133 SDRAM 210 MB/s
PentiumMMX-166 Asus TX97-E i430TX PC66 SDRAM 190 MB/s
K6-266 Asus SP97-V SiS5598 Int. 66 MHz EDO RAM 60 MB/s

As you can see I spanked the K6-III-450 in the Mem Read test, and almost equalled it in the Mem Write test...

What range of scores can your rigs get??

I get

310 Read
141 Write

with the Epox G5 in my sig.

Interestingly, I can't run 3.85, only 3.80. When I try to run 3.85, my PC reboots.

I get

371 MB/s read
144 MB/s write

Hmm... need to fix a sig it seems

The above is on a Gigabyte GA-5AX rev 5.2, K6-3+ @ 115x5
and with PC133 mem.

And georgep, I'm betting you can solve your problem by
removing the aida32.sys and aida32.vxd (taken from the FAQ).

Worked for me ;)

When I had all the trouble I mentioned in the general section, I finally downloaded the Sandra benchmarks (because they are pretty much the standard synthetic) and ran some tests. In short, Via sucks bad. The results I got were way lower than the ones you guys are getting for the memory benchmark, and the differences between the K6-III+ and K6-2 are minimal, mainly because the benchmark is not for testing the cache (they have another that does), but is supposed to avoid it. So, yes, the K6-2 can compete in this benchmark, but the benchmark designed for exactly that purpose. Your benchmark may be different, but I doubt it. When I ran the test, the K6-2 was within 10 MB of the K6-III+, which was easy to test because I had two exact same configurations but with the different processors, and I was able to disable the L2 on the K6-III+.

In practice, however, the K6-III+ is a much faster processor, at least on the MVP3 with its putrid memory bandwidth. When you run more demanding applications, particularly at higher multipliers, the difference is very apparent. The K6-2 spends too much time waiting for memory.

AIDA32 reborn as Everest

Post by erniecc »

AIDA32 has been reborn as EVEREST, apparently when the author became part of another company, The "home" (or personal) editon is still free. I just downloaded it from

I had two generic sticks of PC133, one 128 MB and one 256 MB.
IIRC one was branded SpecTek, just ordinary cheap stuff.

You guys are blowing my doors off. I get a crummy 236 read, 75 write, and a whopping 288.9 latency. So what am I doing wrong? K6BV3+/66 RevB2 w/1Meg cache - K6-3+ @ 6x100. 768Meg ram. - Too much?

Edit: According to this program, Four bank interleave is available, but not enabled. My bios hasn't got that feature, and when I tried George Breese"s program, I got cyclical booting, wouldn't go into Windows, get so far then start over. Any suggestions on how to cure that?

Yeah Jim , this program I really wonder what it actually reads to post the speeds that it does.

I stuck the Everest Home Edition into another setup and it did not matter alot whicxh type of memory or the amount or the Hard drive whether a 1 gig slow old unit or a later 10 gig 2mb cache unit running in the system the ratings posted by this program were very close to each other.

We need several other standard types of test to rate the system's effectiveness to preform.

I get the idea that Everest may rate the Cache speeds more than anything or just the M.B.'s main chipset responses .

I still think a series of tests involving internet browser responses and game loading and playing and file transfers is where the focus of the real attention should be keyed in on.

Next test set programs please post some anyone ? :?

Well I went over to AMDZone and a forum member there (NDDNickon) was stating that in a GA-5AX BIOS setting better performance could be achieved by setting the [Host Read DRAM command] to "ByPass" from "Syn" and disabling onboard Cache.

I tried it , and now my Everet Home Ed. readings are the same as "cake" 's 371 MB/s read , 144 MB/s write .
Obviously the onboard cache does slow the memory operations in this test about 5% .....learning something still 8)
