Question: Have you tried : 1) Setting your MoBo settings at some reduced level then upping your speed with a software adjuster? You can go to the downloads section here and download K6Speed for that purpose. (That is how I got my K6-3+ ACZ 450 to run stable @ 2.1V. @ 600 Mhz, when it would not do it just by setting the board at 100 Mhz x2[=6]) It is supposed to be easier on your processor, (increasing its life), because instead of hitting it w/ full power all at once when you turn on your machine, you are starting it at reduced power then stepping it up.

2) Rain. If you are running Win98 Rain will definitely help your stability, and temperature. I don't know offhand if it is in the download section, but there are links to download sites to be found in the posts here.

Magnus, not "feeling any heat at all" when you touch the heatsink is not a good sign, especially at 2.3, etc. That can mean you're getting poor contact and reduced heat transfer to the sink.

37C? Anyone's guess, but I'd download free Speedfan to check the temps, not to mention check bios (?) for cpu temps. Maybe above, but do you have a thin layer of paste on the chip?

Absolutely ditto on Rain! Here's a link (it's free):

Here's a free, tiny Speedfan:

xroyal: Question for you. What is the difference between Rain 10 and Rain 20? Do you have a preference?

Jim, exactly what I asked the person who put me on to it, no answer. I went ahead and tried Rain10 (only), and it suits me fine. I just checked Speedfan, and my CPU temp is 25C, 80x80 fan at 943rpms - cool and quiet!

In fact, I put it on my Socket A rig too (also 98SE), and worked equally well.

K, then 1 more question: What would you recommend for a girl whose place is often badly overheated, whose machine is running XP ? (DFI K6BV3+/66 Rev B2 w/1Meg Cache & K6-3+ 450 ACZ @ 6x100 @ 2.1v. )

A lot of variables. First Q is, what is the room temp? What is the cpu temp now? Maybe it's ok now.

The ambient sometimes ranges up into the 90s F, (Guesstimate - just feels stifleing hot), and her processor temp sometimes goes up as high as the low 40s C. (Have measured 43 C) Her normal operating temp I am not sure of, but it is probably in the 30s C. Is there any cooler that will run under XP (supplanting the built in one)? What she does is mostly on line chatting w/ about a half dozen conversations going at once.

One person I read about uses Rain along w/XP in a notebook, and says it helps.

Those temps aren't great, but not awful either. If she's not getting instability, maybe do nothing. If she is, try Rain, and if not enough, I'd try another cooler for that tropical weather in Toronto. Better case exhaust fan may help too. Backing the cpu down to 550@2.0 wouldn't hurt what she's doing.

I modded her AT case to put in 2x486 fans where the serial and printer ports usually go right under the power supply. It also has an 80mm front chassis fan blowing fresh air in. There isn't room to do much more in that regard. I wasn't sure it was safe to run Rain under XP, because XP has its own cooler (less efficient); and when you install Rain it asks if Rain is already running on the machine; and says to not install if it is. Didn't know if the XP cooler counted as some other version of Rain.

I guess not, if someone else is using it w/ XP. Thanks.
