Further info regards this problem. Just ran Sandra's internet connection benching suite. Results as follows on 98 side :

LAN BANDWIDTH BENCHMARK :
"Could not obtain the IP Address of the host"

INTERNET CONNECTION BENCHMARK :
"ERROR No reply from host Host may be offline"

INTERNET PEERAGE BENCHMARK :
Several tests run. First result is representative of best results: Second result is representative of average. (Note : This is with Rogers High Speed Cable)

Data Bandwidth = 42 kb/s
Data Latency = 79 ms
Average Latency = 79 ms
Min / Max Latency = 49 / 125 ms
Min / Max Speed = 15 / 69 kb/s

Data Bandwidth = 23 kb/s
Data Latency = 115 ms
Average Latency = 115 ms
Min / Max Latency = 69 / 196 ms
Min / Max Speed = 1 / 37 kb/s

Did you try another port on the router?

CAT5 can go forever...so 30 feet is not excessive. You could probably get a kit and just put new ends on it, unless the cable has been damaged in some way (staple through it, etc...).

The ping test will show if the connection to the router is bad (excessive time).

Jim,

I cant really tell you much from those numbers. The bandwidth and latency are quite bad, BUT that could simply be because your landlord was using a lot of bandwidth at the time. As KachiWachi mentioned also, I wanted you to ping the dlink router itself. Dont worry about checking anything outside the router until your reasonably sure that your connection to the router is good. One other question I thought of to add to the ones in my last post, do you just have one computer hooked up your landlords router? If more than one, are they experiencing the same problem? And also just to clear something up for me, are you still having this problem in both win98 and xp?
Jim wrote:The cable is 30 feet long. It runs from upstairs in the landlords place down to mine in the basement. Would have to get a new one made to try changing it. Is that length excessive?
You are fine. 30 feet is no where near the limits for cat5.

Jim wrote: Will try this "Pinging business" but may need help. I am pretty useless at this sort of thing. Should I do it from the 98 side or the XP side? Or does it matter? XP will be difficult because for now at least, I can't get here from that side. Thanks.
Both would be preferable I guess.

K; I went and got a new cable today, in case that is the problem. Will install that and see if problem goes away. If not will resort to Pinging.

Problem still there. Computer shop says with ??5 cable, length not problem. Leaves LAN Card settings, and Router settings. Or defective card or router. Will now attempt to figure out what you guys are talking about re "Pinging"

A ping basically says "hey...are you there...and how much time till you reply?".

For a brief explanation, type "ping /?" at the command prompt.

Attempts to ping unsuccessfull. Disconnected Superpuppy 3; and hooked up Superpuppy 2. Different mobo, different Lan card, settings at defaults as far as I know. Messenger, (much newer, fairly recent but not latest), logging in and out about every 30 seconds. Either router, router settings, or Moronshit hacking my machine trying to force me to update my messenger.

what IP address were you trying to ping? If you arent sure how to find its IP, just type "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt, then look for "Default Gateway" and to the right of that will be there routers IP address.

EVEREST can also tell you the Gateway IP (Network -> Windows Network -> Network Adapter Address -> Gateway).

This shouldn't have anything to do with the Messenger.

hello jim,

since you still are complaining about the messenger logging on/off problem you may have not realized that there is a remedy to it:

just let me copy and paste what I wrote:

"maybe you can use the tweak-tool x-setup to to have messenger stop searching for updates (search for "messenger" within x-setup).

the tool is available as freeware (non-commercial use) in version 6.6

you can get version 6.6 right here:
http://www.chip.de/downloads/c1_downloads_12992822.html

the site is in german, but just follow the "zum download" link. it will let you decide whether you want the slow connection (free) or the faster one (charge).

an alternative is to download version 7.1, which is shareware ( $8 ). I do not know whether and to what extend version 7.1 is crippled to make you buy it, but you will be fine with free version 6.6 too!!"

by installing this tool, you will not only get rid of your messenger problem, you will get a lot more useful tweaks (about 1500) for every purpose you can think of.

sorry, it won't help you with your lan-problem ... :(

Ok guys, second attempt at pinging is in progress. Last night got strange results.

Don Pedro: You may find my latest EDIT in the topic K6-3+ 450 ACZ under / over clocking results of interest to you. Go to the last post by me before the ones I removed. It is in there. ASUS P5A-B Rev 104 Everest Memory Write = 185 !!! (Superpuppy 2)

Having determined the IP details for this machine will be shutting down to hook up Superpuppy 3 to get its again. (Different router port). Once done will ping.

Alright have pinged, both when my connection is acting up and not. (I forced it to act up by trying to read a news story.) Results as follows. ping my own machine 0ms average <0data loss. Ping router 0ms average <0data loss. Ping ISP times ranging from about 18ms to 50ms 0data loss.

When connection acting up : Ping my own machine 0ms average <0data loss. Ping router "Hardware Error" Ping ISP "Hardware Error"

Does the landlord have this problem with his machine?

I'd swap ports...put yourself on his port and see what happens. Maybe the router is going bad...

This is a weird problem, and the intermittent ones are the most annoying. I have to wonder if it isn't hardware related, like the cable at the landlord's end (although you checked it once, could it maybe have come loose again?). Are ther any powerful electrical sources near the router that might interfere with the signal (a heating system or something that kicks in once in a while may be causing interference)? Also as were mentioned, is the landlord having internet problems, or can you try to switch router ports?

If none of these things seem to work, as a last resort I would suggest temporarily relocating the machine closer to the actual router and using a different cable to connect it. Maybe the cable you use has a crimp in it that intermittently drops or weakens the signal over time, or even after a temperature change. Finally, maybe a router firmware upgrade is in order. A new firmware on the router may stabilize its operation. :? :? :?

Good luck, I'd probably be chucking computer, keyboard, mouse, monitor and router out the window by now :P
