During the "Burnin" of Superpuppy 2, (K6-3+ 450ACZ on ASUS P5A-B Rev 104), Norton "system doctor" informs me that there has been as much as 704 Meg of RAM being used by WIN98-SE, @ ZERO swap file usage with the Unofficial Service Pack installed.

Actually from my experience WIN98-SE was limited to 256 Meg before I installed the "Unofficial Service Pack". I have always used Norton Utilities 2000 w/ WIN98-SE; (Though I don't let any of it run in the background except sometimes "System Doctor"); and one of their functions allows you to track how much ram is in use at all times. This has been reported recently as being 704 Meg. (During burnin).

NEVER ONCE before I installed the "Unofficial Service Pack" did the amount of ram in use exceed 261xxxK. The "Unofficial Service Pack" raises that limit I believe to 4 Gig.(Edit: - Apparently WRONG) :) .

Edit: Read all the articles you gave links to. Can only assume that in order to avoid the "Insufficient Memory" problem, that Windows 98-SE sets up with a line in the sysini file limiting it to 256 Meg. - That would explain why it never used more than 256 Meg before I installed the "Unofficial Service Pack". Exactly what workaround the "Unofficial Service Pack" employs, I don't know; just know it works.

Edit: The best of the articles that KachiWachi has posted links to on this subject, (in my opinion), can be found by using his second link, then by going to the bottom of the page that brings up, where you will find a link to a series of articles by Ron Martel. Good stuff. I decided after reading them to check to see what limit was set on Superpuppy 2's vcache. Turned out to be 323208k. Within limits for a machine w/ 768 Meg of ram. Raised it to 512000. Will be testing to see if that translates to any improvement in performance.

See : "UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 11.1" posted by Nohr in the news section. Note: Current version is 2.02.

Edit: And thank you KachiWachi; I would never have known about all that but for you. Leaves me wondering if Don Pedro wasn't right when he said the "Unofficial Service Pack" was unnecessary. Not sure, one way or other now.

Thanks there Mr. Guest. Have had some stability issues with the previous version. Will try this.

:( Was unstable for me. I got a X-Explorer Error-X when I tried to open My Compueter from the desktop. (Didn't have Unicode installed though)

My experience with earlier versions of the "Unofficial Service Pack" was that it had a tendancy to overwrite newer files w/ older versions without telling you about it. In some cases that caused program failure with errors and instability attendant.

What I have been doing lately is install the "Unoficial Service Pack" immediately after installing Windoze before updating so as to avoid the overwite w/ older files problem. Don't know what this latest version does.
