Netscape 6 Who wants to give an opinion?

Post by io333 »

Experiment time:

Netscape has finally released a version of it's browser that's pretty damn good as compared to the past few months. Right now it's called Netscape 6.1 Public Release 1 (beta), but it's actually Mozilla 0.91. It works just about IDENTICALLY on either Linux or Windows. If you havn't tried linux and your main browser is internet explorer, I'd love it if you gave this thing a try.

You see, right now Netscape 6.1Pr1 is the BEST browser available for linux, but in my opinion isn't quite as good as IE5.5 for a number of reasons. What I'm interested in is why YOU don't think it's as good as IE, or alternatively, why you think it's Better?

The only real way to get it to work right is to go here:

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/en ... br>
and download all 24 Megabytes of it. If you try to install it any other way, chances are you'll never get Java, or any plugins to work (believe me on this!) -- so it's a hell of a download.

I've already tried it, both linux side and windows side and it did NOT hose my system. It's pretty darn safe IMHO. And even though they're calling it a beta, it's a hell of a lot more stable than any other release of netscape since 2.x

I'd love to hear any other opinions of this thing.

oh c'mon... it's not that bad. I just click on the download when I go to bed and a third of the time it's there when I wake up. I managed to get 90megs of staroffice that way. (although that was a MIRACLE!)

I use netscape comm 4.77 for everything on line. Quite stabil, never crashes system, just rarely (less than once a week), quietly crashes itself....

I tryed version 6 when it was frist released....... the $#@$@!^ peice of $$#@ would lock my system when d/ling or u/ling mail....I mean lock! I could not use my IM, or even the caculator or notepad til the u/l or d/l of mail was done! I send in the bug report and never heard back!

It also had too many pauses in it. I t would at times just stop for 20-30 seconds for no apperant reasons reason.

Needless to say, it is gone off my system!! I also did not like the new 'look'.

I have used netsacpe from version 1 on. Sadly, it looks like the support is going to be leaving us...

I refuse to use IE and Outlook. IE is just too slow and it seems that every virus writing scum targets outlook and they seem to leave netscape alone.

my $.02 worth...

--
theory240
computer adjusters of allegan

try this then:

<a href="http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/rele ...

It's the mozilla version for windows. It's only 9meg 'cause it doesn't come with plugins, although it does include mail and instant messaging. It's LEAPS & BOUNDS beyond the original Netscape 6 release. Actually, I don't think it's crashed on me yet.
