My P5A-B only sees 8Gbs

Post by Wiggy »

Afternoon guys.

Now, I haven't been on here for a while. :? Truth is that I simply didn't have enough space in my old place to run the SS7 system. But now I've moved into a place with my GF. Yay! So I've dusted off the old girl to get her running again. :D

The (latest) trouble I've got is that I've hooked up a IBM 160Gb to my P5A-B and the BIOS only reports 8Gb. So I had a look around and found one of these Disk Managing software on Maxtor's Site. (IBM don't seem to have one.) On trying that, it only reports 30 odd Gb.

So how do I get the BIOS (if it needs to), or this Disk Managing software to recognise the whole 160Gb?

Oh, I'm of course using the 1011 Beta 5 Bios.

Cheers for any help peeps.

Try Hitachi's website for similar software. IBM sold its Hard Drive division to them a few years back.

All the same, not sure if the P5A would recognize that large a hard drive. I think support peaked at 30-40GB. Can anyone confirm?

You should be able to get up to 128 GB native with this BIOS.

Thanks.

My P5A-Bs will recognize 40 Gig drives; but I never tried anything larger.

After fiddling for a bit. The bios now recognises 34Gb. I didn't have LBA mode on.

But that's still not too good.

I don't get it..... :?:

Probably related to the fact, (at least I suppose it is a fact), that your board is only capable of recognizing drives up to 128 or 137 Gig max. Given that you are using a drive larger than its maximum recognition capability, I suspect what it is doing is attempting to calculate what size the drive is based on cylinder and head count; and coming up w/ the wrong answer because it is incapable of recognizing the values that drive has. You will probably have to use an "Overlay" to get it working properly.

Ah sorted!

Found IBMs overlay software. Here

Started her up set the disk to the full capacity. Then it said Nope.

Quite rightly the BIOS doesn't like over 128Gbs, so I set it to that and off we go.

Brilliant, I can start playing now. :o

Some say you can ignore this if you are using W2K or WinXP (because the OS will take care of it for you)...but if it was me, I'd want the BIOS in control of things.

Thanks.
