Ram & Other Problems On Bingo Bunny 3

Post by Jim »

Bingo Bunny 3 is driving me Bugfu--. With 512 Meg of DDRAM installed, (and reported at post), Win98-SE, (with the unofficial service pack installed), is reporting, (Sandra, Everest, Norton Utilities 2000 all say the same stupid thing), are you ready ? : 64 lousy meg. I have disabled all the onboard crap, except for the LAN and USB; but still 64 crummy meg of usable RAM.

SOooo said me, fine, if Sandra is saying 512 Meg/64@400, how be it I put in 2 Gig ? That should get it up to 256 Meg at least; but NO ! - even with 2 Gig installed, (And reported at post), Win98-SE is STILL seeing and using 64 Measly Meg !! - 100% RAM usage at all times, continual paging to and from the HDD, etc. Disgusting. Uptown computer is blaming it on WIN98-SE. I wonder if the Mobo is defective.

Were that not bad enough, another problem is that the lousy LG Super Multi Drives will NOT play audio disks. I can rip songs from a disk in either of the drives, copying them to the HDD; and play them from there; but not just play them directly from the optical drives.

WHY ?? (On both counts).

Of the 64mb ram is it split between memory slots or is it being read from just one slot.

You could download and burn an iso image of linux ubuntu onto a cd and see what ubuntu sees when booted from the cd.

Tony, I don't know If it is reading all RAM from 1 slot or both. Nor do I know how to find out. If I can't get a better suggestion, what I am going to do is wipe the "C" partition, (It is already backed up on "P"), and have Uptown install XP, then if the problem is still there, they can replace the frigging mobo they supplied.

I KNEW I was wise to stick with the proven technology of AT machines thereby avoiding all the latest headaches the manufacturers have devised for us. "DDR RAM", I suppose that stands for "Doubley Damned Rotten".

Jim, what motherboard is in this machine? Do you have chipset drivers installed for Win98?
This is very strange.

@ Uranium 235 : It is an ECS 761GX-M754 V3.0A. I think that the chipset drivers are installed, but that is something to check. Thanks. The machine was not properly loaded from scratch, because Gloria had over 60 old DOS games on her old machine, some of which I did not have install programs for. What I did was take the new setup and copy certain files from her old one to get her games working.

OK, The audio problem is solved. Proved to be Windows Media Player was hogging the resources required to play Audio CDs, (Comes Preset as Default Player), but was not initialized; because every time I tried to initialize it it seemed to freeze the machine. In fact it was not freezing, just taking its time because of the measly 64 Meg of RAM. Left alone to initialize, (done by Roger, with all the wrong default selections, i.e. left as its own defaults, which makes Windows Media Player the default player for EVERYTHING), I can now use Windows Media Player to play Audio CDs. The RAM issue thus far remains unsolved.

jim,

what about using cdplayer.exe for audio-cds?
you can make this program the default player for audio-cds by opening any explorer-window, then extras/options, tab file-types, search for audio-cd entry. work on this item, create a new handler eg CDPlayer and let it point to C:\WINdows\system32\cdplayer.exe (or whereever the file is located). then make it the "standard" handler.

Roger installed XP on Bingo Bunny 3; and now it seems it is recognizing the RAM properly. I say seems, because all the other extra software has to be reinstalled to compensate for the change in Operating systems. Won't know for sure till I get that done. The machine is very fast in terms of Everest results. It is the fastest single core machine listed, and is faster than 6 dual core machines in Memory Read; and faster than 7 dual core machines in terms of Memory Write.. Impressive for a "Starter Kit" which is what "Uptown Computer" called it.
