some more detailed view on k6 cpus

Post by kalabok »

here i am again. :D

i decided to post some work i did the last months and finally finished just this week. ok, to tell the truth there are still things undone, but just read and see.

i was wondering if it would be possible to determine the total number of k6 2+/III+ produced by amd. ok, i dont needed the exact number, but a way to proceed - afterwards i would see it isnt that easy.

first some explanations on k6 cpus - they nearly all look equal. i wondered what do all the imprints in the ceramic socket do mean, cause there is no information about that.
i was quite astonished to find the cpu frequency, the cpu code number (26727 on the foto) and a 7-digit number on it. hard to see, well, but if you want you will read them.

the 26727 do have all 180nm k6 cpus. durons and atlons have 27xyz and so on, most k6-2 have 26351. i think amd used it to distinguish the cpu type.

ok so far. the most interesting is, that the 7-digit gravure number (Gn) does change. first i thought - well, if every cpu gets a single unique number it will be an easy game. i just picket up some numbers and tried to get a dependence from the production date (Pd).

the second picture shows my final investigations. there are two types of cpus exisitng - with a Z or an F on the beginning of the Gn. actually it is a letter with 6digits behind, which really shows linear dependence from Pd.
the slope we get is the number of cpus produced per week! lol. if i wouldnt have bought 42 cpus recently - they all have exactly the same gravure number (Z123349).
that means, amd produced these cpus in portions, maybe all my cpus come from same waver or an 15-minute production timescale. no idea, i think we will never know. there may be 50 or even 5000 cpus with same Gn.
the Z and the F type of Gn could be different amd production facilities. this means there were only two existing, but i cannot be sure as i dont have seen every cpu.

to calculate the total number of k6 180nm isnt that easy in a second manner. amd introduced their mobile k6 versions on 18 april 2000 (week 16) but i observed first 2+ aczm cpus to have a Pr 0005 - week 5 in year 2000. when was the last cpu produced? the latest i found was week 24 in 2003. this isnt for sure as well.

for total number calculations alot of approximations have to be done. dont want to bother you with it; what i get is something like 80 million k6plus cpus out there ...

and here is something about the loved k6 III+.

i am now quite sure, there are 12 different of them out there. i tried to get all the pictures of them together, i am still collecting:

K6 IIIE+ standard power versions:
400acr, 450acr 500acr and 550acr

k6 IIIE+ low power versions:
400atz, 400apz, 450apz, 450anz and 500anz.

k6 III+ mobile versions:
450acz, 475acz and 500acz.

the rarest cpu is definitly the 500acz. never ever saw pictures of it, but amd datasheets do claim it exists.

Wow, that is dedication. The "Z" might refer to processors assembled in Malayasia, assuming not all of them were. Good to see you back.

Kalabok,

Here is something more to chew over. I have just looked at all of my K6-2+ and K6-3+ cpu's. All of them fall in line with what you describe above apart from two of them as follows.

K6-III+/400ATZ 0239FPAW 26727 T707223

Definitely starts with a T

K6-2+/400ATZ 0233FPCW 26727 9260853

Definitely no leading Z or F or T.

oh, thanks for that info, stedman (i slightly do remember you sent me these once allready).
never saw numbers with a T at the beginning - this was/is confusing me. i would be very happy if someone else could provide some similar numbers.
gravure numbers with a 9 i met only on very old year 98 cpus.
do both refer to other amd facilities :?:

here is indeed more data needed.

K6 - III+ 450 ACZ assembled in Malaysia 1999 ; Gravure Number : 2719587 or possibly Z719587 (Very difficult to determine which, I used two magnifiers one above the other to read it. The top crossbar is shorter than the bottom one)

The line you identified as the production date, (yellow border), has : A 0025GPDW

The other number which you outlined in red at the lower left is the same as the example you posted : 26727

The number at the top right holds true to the logic you posted. In this case : 450MHZ

Jim,

Must be a popular week for K6plus's. My 4 K6-III+/450's are exactly the same week of manufacture as yours with all the same codings.

thanks, jim!

i will try to upload the data posted here in future. i see your processor lies slightly below the Z-line - as far as i can tell, it is definitly a z-type cpu.

K6-2+ 550ACZ Assembled in Malaysia 1999
Gravure Number : 4F90829
Production Date : A 0031MPM
Lower Left : 26727
Top Right : 550MHZ

Note that the "F" is in the second position behind the "4". Don't know what that does to theories; but it is real. Have 3 other + processors I can check , 2x3+450ACZs & 1x2+550ACZ but they are all currently installed in built manchines. Forgot also have 1 decapped 3+450ACZ w/ defective heat transfer for some reason, can check that one too.

K6-2 550AGR 2.3V Assembled Malaysia 1998
Graveur Number : 2 (or) Z822861 (This processor has the top of the numbers cut off because the edge is beveled)
Production Date : A 0051MPMW
Lower Left : 26351
Upper Right : 550MHZ

K6-2 350AFR - Does not have usual Assembled Malaysia - Instead has Malay at lower right corner and 1998 under the Production Date
Graveur Number :2 (or) Z 533111
Production Date : A 9851FPMW
Lower Left : 26351
Upper Right :350MHz

Probably of no interest; but included in case :
AMD : Am486 TM DX40 (Malaysia)
A80486DX-40
E6 9429DPD
Lower Left : 24361
No Graveur Number

The rest are all in machines. Will chech them the next time apart.

Found another one :
K6-2 533AFX (2.2V) Assembled Malaysia 1998
Graveur Number : 40F6774
Production Date : A 0014MPM
Lower left 26351
Upper Right : 533MHz

Note : Besides the 3x K6-3+450ACZs in SP2, SP3, & SP5; and the 1x K6-2+550ACZ in SP1; I also have a couple of other plain K6-2 processors in built machines one of which I think is a 300, and the other of which I am not sure; but it is probably a 500 AFX that I can check when I get around to it if you like.

The K6-3+ 450ACZ that I already gave you the data from is my spare. The K6-2+ 550ACZ is the processor from Gloria's old machine, "Bingo Bunny 2".

ok,

some thoughts: the numbers with the letter inside the Gn number (4F...) are only observed on cpus with the *P* coding (not *P*W). i have no idea what these four letters mean.
recently i found another T type cpu, but im not sure about it; stedman, can you have a look here and maybe confirm it?

http://freenet-homepage.de/lochfrass/k6-iii_400_atz.jpg

i would be happy about data from 2001 to 2003 - mostly these are K6 IIIE+ cpus, like acr and atz/apz/anz.
do you noted, there are no acz processors younger than the late weeks of 2000?

Kalabok,

The earliest K6plus cpu I have is a week 12 2000 and is a K6-2+/450ACZM
The earliest K6plus ACZ I have is K6-2+550/ACZ which happens to coincide with the lastest ACZM chip I have which is K6-2+/533ACZM. Both manufactured week 23 2000. The lastest ACZ chip I have is a week 39 chip year 2000 K6-2+/550ACZ. With regards to the embedded chips the earliest I have of those is the K6-III+/400ACR manufactured week 9 of 2001. the lastest one is the K6-III+/400ATZ made in week 39 2002.

going back to the markings on the cpus you will also notice the "K" on the bottom RH corner. This is the same for all the K6plus cpus I have. However for other K6-2's in the same place there is usually an "N" but sometimes it is "K".

Also on the bottom left marks I have for one K6-2/400 reading 26369 rather than the usual 26351. The 26369 figure is usually on the K6-III cpus. Maybe this one was one where the cache was defective and was downgraded to a K6-2.

i do have a 550acz chip, which was produced in week 44. but i never met one of the year 2001/02/03 ... amd stoped producing them?
