Does anybody know anything about the ATI 9800 All in Wonder

Post by Jim »

I am on good terms with a store here in Toronto, and they have a used ATI 9800 All in Wonder, that they let me take home, deal being, If I can get it working, and I want it, then go back and pay them $20.00, if not, then take the card back to them. Question is : What kind of Mobo do I need to support one of these cards ? I know they don't work on Super 7s.

If you are on the AMD side and looking for the oldest, probably anything like a VIA KT133 and up will do, due to agp 4x support. I don't know about KX133, because these older slot A boards had some signal issues at 4X even though I didn't experience them at the time with GF2s. These boards still experience pci latency issues so Creative Live cards aren't recommended, but a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz/Terratec 6pack or anything CM4630 based does wonders.
The slightly later ALiMAGiK 1 should also work, but imho it's slower with pc133 (I've ran 2x512MB pc133 on both) and not very compatible with newer ddr400 sticks.

Thanks AlleyViper, How about an Intel D815 EFV Universal Board ? will it work in that ? Or a Gigabyte GA6_VA7+ ? I have both of them, and they both have 4x AGP, but I don't know if they have the right AGP standard to supply the requisite voltage.

Hi Jim,
In its day, the 9800 was the most powerful card out there. It supports from 8-2x AGP. I have a 9600XT still in my desktop, works great. ATI's website has all the info on card specs:

http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9800/ ... specs.html

Caveat, if you're thinking of using the TV Tuner, it's probably not very useful as it supports only NTSC, not ATSC signal.

Thanks Cthulhu8u, but I've found that page before. Problem is none of the links on it work. AMD is pushing planned obsolesence pretty hard. You can't get info about any of the older stuff very easily.

The best I could find was
http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/aiw9800pro/

All based off of a google search:
http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&q=ati+radeo ... 9a3503d34a

I guess the best compatibilty this card will give is to look for a motherboard circa 2003 since that's when the card came out. 8x AGP would also be your best bet if you want the most performance/stability. For example, my nForce2 motherboard would be a great fit.
The biggest problem I always imagined with the AIW cards is all that extra circuitry it has to run. If you don't need a TV tuner etc., do you really want to run a card with all that extra stuff? It used to mean different/extra drivers and a bit more unnecessary heat/voltage. Also, more things that could go south on that card and make it useless.

I used to have a Rage 128 Pro version of the All-In-Wonder, it always ran very hot because of the tuner. Now the tuner would be useless. Not only that, but there were different versions of the 9800 chip too. There is Pro, XT, LE (two versions), a 9800 Pro w/ DDR2, and straight (non-pro) 9800, to confused things a little more. Which one is supplied on that A-I-W?

Crazy.

Hi Ken, It is a "PRO" "128Meg" though whether or not it has DDR2 I don't know. The RAM chips say :
Hynix Kor HY50U283222A F - 28 418A W7CD7036KQ and there are 4 of them on each side of the card.

An AIW 9800 Pro has 128MB of DDR2 memory on board: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9800/ ... index.html

You would be able to use that card on just about any motherboard from the time of its release or later that has an AGP slot. Actually, I suspect it would work on any board that supports AGP 2X or better and has decent capacitors.

I had an AIW 9700 Pro for several years, finally selling it on Anandtech for $50 late last year after I switched to a board with PCIe only. The card ran well on several different boards, even an AsRock PCIe-AGP combo board that didn't always do AGP very well.

The TV tuner doesn't work directly anymore, of course, but you can hook it up to a converter like any other analog TV, and get digital TV that way. I used my AIW 9700 that way until I replaced it.

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

Thanks for the info JSC1973. Though the 9700 is more compatable with various boards than the 9800 is, I have gotten it working on the Intel D815 EFV board. It is good to know about the converter trick. What sort of converter do you reccommend ?
