where are the embedded K6+ ??

Post by jeepster »

I believe that after AMD stopped making the desktop K6, they continued
to make an embedded version of the K6+, which ran on 1.8 volts.
I have come accross a few mentions that these could be overclocked
past 600 MHz with a standard fan.
Now I have been checking for AMD K6 in online auction sites over the
last few years, and I have never seen any of these <embedded> K6
CPUs for sale. So are these things still ticking away, or have they
not been salvaged?

I have not seen any K6 E processors. They did make a K6-3 500 ANZ that ran at 1.8 v. and could be OCed upwards of 600 Mhz. Kalabok, (a member here), had some of them for sale.

The K6+ embedded processors did not have any specific markings to say that they were embedded such as an E mark. Basically there were a number of K6-3+ cpu's that were used as embedded processors. They were differentiated as high powered and low powered versions. So for instance the K6-3+/400ATZ is a low powered embedded processor. The K6-3+/550ACR was a high powered embedded processor. If you search the AMD site well enough you can get hold of the K6-3+ and K6-2+ embedded data sheets. They are 23542a [1] and 23543a [1] pdf files

I have a number of these embedded cpu's and have found them to not be any better or worse than the original laptop cpu's such as K6-3+/450ACZ. Got to say though that I have never had the good fortune to try a 550ACR. Having said that I have never been able to run a K6plus cpu beyond 630Mhz on a normal air cooled set up.

Every once in a while, you see one of these embedded chips for sale. The only difference between them and a standard K6-III+ is that they can run on less than 2.0 v, and were normally marked at 1.8 or 1.6v. Back around 2001, I heard of someone running a K6-III+ 550 1.8v chip at 672 MHz on 2.1v, but couldn't go any higher than that. There were rumors of people hitting 744 (6*124) on an FIC VA-503+, but I never saw any proof that was actually achieved. If they did, that would have been a screamer in its day.

The architecture was theoretically capable of going that high. ALi created the Aladdin 7 chipset because they thought AMD was going to keep making K6-III+ chips at speeds above 600 MHz, using a 133 MHz bus. But their yields on the Athlon were so good, and the demand for it so high, that they killed the idea.
FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

K6 3+ embedded

Post by Steven67 »

hello,

nice if this link can help you to find your 'baby' ...
I bought mine in France, but I think it came from this vendor in Deutchland.

It runs fine @600 with 2,1-2,2 volts and 617-620 is ok with 2,4 volts. I have never tried 2,5 volts nor read someone runs @2,5 volts.
Here is @617 mhz
Image

However, you can find an 'embedded' reached 692 mhz in the french o/c database, here :
http://www.hardware.fr/myocdb.com/categorie47.html

My K6-III+ (@6*100) is here :
http://www.hardware.fr/myocdb.com/fiche20647.html

Good luck.

yeah, thats true - have a look at the p561a specs, this socket 7 mobo was designed for cpus which never existed

actually every non-ACZ model k6 plus is a "E = embedded" version - there are the standard ACR (2,0 V) and the low voltage versions (down to 1,5 V)

there were peaple in this forum who reached the 800mhz limit with phase change cooling (search for user named turrican).

I had a 400Mhz E model a few years ago. Nothing to write home about. Used 1.6v, I believe. Hard to find. Even when there were more K6 on Ebay than today, you hardly ever saw an embedded model.

Hey Stedman (or anyone),

Would you be willing to part with one of your embedded CPUs? I wanted to use it for a NAS. I currently use a 450Mhz plus CPU, so if you have a 450 or higher (I read on press releases from 2000 that AMD shipped up to 550Mhz on these embedded units), let me know. Otherwise, maybe I could just stick with what I have.

Funny how I wrote the above, and now I want one (sold it long ago). Ironic. :o
