Hello,
if i had the hcoice between asus p5a-b and ga-5aa, which one would be the better one?
Both support 80G HDDs and the Asus board has also a temperatur and fan monitoring... In which one will a 9100 ATI run more fine?
It is truth that the asus board dont have ATA 66? i mean both have the same chipset, or not?
i know also about the problem that i need a asus board up to 1.06 revision to run a mobile k6.
best regards
Asus p5a-b vs ga-5aa
RE: Asus p5a-b vs ga-5aa
Some facts : The ASUS P5A-B IS ATA 33. But in spite of that it gives better performance than a DFI K6BV3+/66 which is ATA 66. Further DO NOT GET a Rev 105 or 106 board if you are using an ASUS P5A-B because they do not have a bios capable of properly supporting K6-3+ processors. The best thing to do is get a Rev 104 board and flash the bios to the German 1011-005 bios. That will give full support to K6-3+ processors. The Rev 105 and 106 boards have a somewhat better chipset, but as already stated there is no bios available for them that supports the K6-3+ processors. As for the ATI 9100, don't know. I use an ATI 9000 All In Wonder on my P5A-B and it works fine.
Re the GA-5AA, again don't know, haven't tried it.

Hello,
firstly, thanks for your informations Jim!
yes i have a k6-3+ and want to run it with this board...
Did you know what ata chipset the asus p5a-b has? (the name)
I want to run the board with linux.
Can you say what average ataspeed it can reach in mb exacly?
i have a old gigabyte ga-5aa but a old revision. now my agp port is dead because i have inserted a wrong card... i will test the ata66 speed also with my board (have a pci vga).
My old ga-5aa has a ata 66 ide controller which is included with the chipset from ali. it would be bad if the ide controller of the p5a-b would be connected over the internal pci-bus. i need the speed for my other cards.
best regards

the asus board is well known for its stability re using any kind of ram ....
also I would suggest installing a pci-ide add-on card like a promise 100/133 + Digitus DS-33151 SATA to IDE Adapter. with that combo you can mount any sata drive you want and boot from it
for more information on using sata-ide converter see here
