Help me Tweak my Computer SUCKS!

Post by BENCHMARKMAN »

My Computer SUCKS. This is so Crazy. I overclock from 103x5.5=566mhz to 115x5=575 and my 3Dmark score goes down from 960 to 950. At 115 fsb and 4 bank interleaving my Memory scores in Sandra are only 185 and 198. What am I doing wrong? Here is my Wpcredit settings maybe some of you Tweak Guru's can find some setting that will help my performance.

--------------------------------------------------------
WPCREDIT Version 1.2a / Copyright (c) 1998-99 By H.Oda!
--------------------------------------------------------
PCI Bus : 0 Vendor ID: 1106
Device : 0 Device ID: 0597
Function: 0 Revision : 04 Host Bridge
--------------------------------------------------------
00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F
+ -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
00 | 06 11 97 05 06 00 90 82 04 00 00 06 00 10 00 00
10 | 08 00 00 D8 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
20 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
30 | 00 00 00 00 A0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
40 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
50 | 80 89 05 50 00 00 00 00 80 00 08 10 10 10 10 10
60 | 03 0A 00 23 22 22 22 00 45 00 65 01 48 21 00 00
70 | C1 88 EC 01 80 80 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 80 40
80 | 0F 41 00 00 C0 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
90 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
A0 | 02 00 10 00 03 02 00 07 02 03 00 00 0E 00 00 00
B0 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
C0 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
D0 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
E0 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
F0 | 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 97 05
--------------------------------------------------------

Amd K6-3+ @ 115x5=575mhz
ATI Radeon @ 166 166
Soltek Sl54U5 m/b with Via MVP chipset
Win98

Site of the new 3D millennium

OK, some preliminary observations...

Your system ram is set at CAS3 (4x interleave though). Try setting registers 64-66 to 1A and see if system will hold (if not, timings too aggressive for memory).

Set Reg 68 to C5. This changes the open page control control setting.

Set Register 53 to 90. This enables backoff CPU, which may help optimize things (try and see if it helps).

See if this helps your mem scores any. Also, check to see what other processes are running that you may not know about. (Use start/run and type msconfig. See what programs are currently in your start menu).

Finally, use my IRQ tweak (look under articles). So far everyone that has done this one has seen gains in stability and/or performance.
____________________

Should you be up for a little experimentation, try this for your AGP (no guarantees, but if it works you will like the result...)

On Device 1, I have these settings for my vid card.
Reg 40 D3
Reg 42 90

Again, no guarantees, but try them and see if your system will work ok with these.

Thanks Mr Toastz I will take a look at that. I know that the Cas3 is not going to work because I had to set it to Cas3 to be stable at 115fsb. I will report back letter with my findings.

BTW
Sorry about not posting a link to this site yet. I will DO it today.
Site of the new 3D millennium

Well *sigh* here are some numbers.

untweaked
ALU=168
FPU=182
Cpumark=53.5

Tweaked
ALU=169
FPU=183
Cpumark=52.2

Those scores just SUCK. This was on a Fresh boot. I looked at the Benchmarks and Mr. Toast you got better numbers at 0nly 103fsb. Thanks for the ideas. Do you have any others? One last question. Is there a way in Wpcredit to check if the L3 cache is on? I ask because Wcpuid say that I don't have L3 cache but in my bios I have external cache enabled.
Site of the new 3D millennium

According to WPCredit, your onboard cache is enabled. Double check in your bios, but your registers (specfically reg 50) show that it is.

What does Sandra report for your onboard cache? (L2 External Cache, under Mainboard info using the System Summary function)?

The CAS3 is affecting your memory scores, which is why they are lower than you might expect. Also, the quality of ram you are using will affect this.

Finally, the active processes (usually indicated as icons listed in the lower right corner of your desktop screen next to the clock) will also lower this score (hence why I told you to check MSConfig).

I have just five active process- scan registry, system tray, EM_Exec (for my mouse), Load Power Profile, and Vortex Tray (for my sound card) checked in the startup and running during Sandra benches. I also have IDETool and SETI, but quit these before benching (often disable the Vortex Tray as well). Not running with a lot of baggage during benching does help bench scores a bit. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Has the IRQ tweak otherwise helped your system performance?
AMD K6III+ 550 @619 2.2v~ DFI K6BV3+/66 Rev B 2 MB~ Cardex GF2 MX 400 4ns GS 250/250~ 256 MB Micron PC133 CAS2~ Aureal SQ2500 (I will miss Aureal)~ Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 45 46.1gb ~ etc etc etc

Hey before I ran my Sandra tests I closed everything except Explorer, Systray and ATI. I already had the Irq tweak done before and it didn't do a whole lot for me. I will say my system when running games is Rock solid. The only time my system crashes is during the screensaver. I also tried the Agp settings but the results were kind of strange. The first time I run the Elite Force Timedemo I get the same results before I tweaked but when I run it a second time I get 5fps more. Strange. Also the settings seem to let me overclock my Video card more. AGP Read Master Caching crashes my system. Also for some reason every time I restart my computer CPU to AGP post write always disables. I'm not sure why I have it enabled in Wpcrest. Thanks again Mr. Toast.
Site of the new 3D millennium

Getting there slowly...

So, how much cache does Sandra show you as having?

I may have some other ideas, but in the meantime keep me updated. BTW, have you run any drive benches before and after the IDE IRQ tweak?

AMD K6III+ 550 @619 2.2v~ DFI K6BV3+/66 Rev B 2 MB~ Cardex GF2 MX 400 4ns GS 250/250~ 256 MB Micron PC133 CAS2~ Aureal SQ2500 (I will miss Aureal)~ Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 45 46.1gb ~ etc etc etc

Sandra say 512k so I guess my L3 cach is working. I've got some good news. I set arbitration parking to CPU and my Elite Force bencmark went from 24-25 fps to 30-31 fps. Thank you for your work Mr. Toast. If you see any other areas in my Wpcredit that need tweaking please tell me. I found out the main problem. When I installed my Sound Blaster Live my system would not Boot up with Uarts Setwbin the Autoexec so I just removed it but Mxk6crck didn't seem to be affected. Well today I looked deeper into the issue and it appears that Mxk6crck is not working any more in the Autoexec. It just says must be run in real mode. I'm going to now use CTU but I need to now how to properly set everything. What do I set the Write Allocation to and should I enable write allocation in 15-to-16mb? How do I get my Write Combing numbers and what do I set it to? Thanks

Site of the new 3D millennium

Write allocation and memory addresses

Post by Mr Toastz »

Hey!

I pretty much let CPUCool set these values. One of the other programs (Uart's utilities?) helps identify which memory addresses to use, but after trying it and figuring out that CPUCool had done a good enough job I left well enough alone.

I Enable everything except the second framebuffer on CPU optimizations in CPUCool. I would tell you my memory ranges but they are likely different than your own. You could run CPUCool long enough to see what RobM's CTU reports these addresses and such at, then use those values from that point forward.
