hello all...
hello all...
I'm new to the old but want to learn. I have a cyrix 6x86MX PR200 processor that runs at 2.9 vcore. I would like to build a system around this for use as a unix firewall for my home. Tazwegion has arranged a motherboard deal for me with another member on here. so I was thinking what would be a good pci video card and how high a wattage power supply would I need
RE: hello all...
200 watts should be plenty for a machine like that, (I think), as for a video card, if that is all you are using the machine for, just about anything should do. (I think). Ask Taz, he knows more about it than I do.

RE: hello all...
Hmmmm... well I got a 145w PSU out of a propriety PIII system and it's still powering a K62-500 box nicely
As for a graphics card, due to the nature of it's purpose/creation (as a firewall/BSD compilier etc.) I wouldn't envisage graphic intensive applications, hence any old PCI/ISA card would suffice, my old S3 Virge 4Mb PCI was good even for basic gaming (in the day ).

Now that is a very interesting question. If you don't have video, how would you know? Answer: I am not sure. I don't think so; but I could easily be wrong. If you have an S3, why not just use it?

I don't believe a system will boot without some form of graphic output, give your friend $2.50 USD for that card (it's polite to be generous! )
Real bargains can be had... I picked up a beautiful Diamond Viper II Z200 AGP for $20.00 AUD and I still haven't got around to using it, due to no windows support beyond 98SE (typical Microsoft)
