hey Jim,

Are you sure about the scanner resolution you just posted? 12000 dpi  ? And the particular model you posted, are you sure it is not the Epson Perfection 3170? This is just an observation of mine, but I can't find the model you have mentioned. The above mentioned model does 3200 x 6400 dpi, and a my friends father purchased an Epson not long ago and I viewed it as the most bloated piece of hardware, with half functional software.

I myself use a Canon 620U, ever since the early part of 2000. I use this baby since the early days of my Trigem Pentium 233mmx PC. I'll provide a link for it: http://www.epinions.com/cmhd-Scanners-A ... y_~reviews This baby is fast, drivers are mininal, software is minimal, but the options are through the roof. Stable drivers, its been with me for almost six years (knocks on wood).

It does 1200x1200 dpi. Is USB 1.1 spec, BUT I SWEAR it works (data transfer wise) like a "theoretical" USB 1.5 device when hooked up to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. This is pure speculative but, that is what it seems to me as though.

I feel very sorry for you K6-3 man, my P4 has some trouble with the 4 MB Jpeg files I scna, I can only imagine what it does to your rig and the 2.5 GB  files.

What do you mainly use the scanner for? I did it for college textbooks mainly, and returned the books promptly within the week.

jim, given the scanner-result above I see your scanner software does indeed a terrific job.

but I would like to put the stress on "software". because you can not "scan" what is actually not there. the result of your scan is "invented" by software.

you say the orignial picture is taken from a magazine. a magazine's print varies between 100 and 300 lpi with an art's catalogue on the upper end.

so whatever resolution you use to scan an image, if you use a resolution higher than the originals print you scan something that was never printed. the scanner scans "between" the "dots" printed and therefore "finds" (invents) something that just was not printed before. anyway, that does not depreciate the formidable work the softare does. I am impressed.

re the size of your scans: can it be that your scanning software automatically creates *.TIF images? this format is well suited for further image processing but the files are x-times larger than *.jpg-s. jpg is not a lossless compression format, I know, but almost all programs I know allow for adjusting the quality of the picture (1-10) with 6 being standard compression/quality ratio). you may make changes here (10 is best picture quality, 1 best compression).

Image

That's ma Boy!!! (The Canon that is  )

Original width x height = 10200x13200 pixels
@horiz x verti resolution = 1200 dpi.

Mr. Clinton's head was originally the size of my thumbnail (there are even smaller "heads" including one of Mike Wallace from the collage I extracted Clinton from)
Granted I didn't have time for "software" optimization with my Photoshop, but I just edited the original with MS Paint, cropped out Clintons head and posted it on imageshack. It was relatively simple, however you do notice little circles around on his face (must be because of how it was printed by the magazine) and it was quite clear to me, Clintons face and hairline was extremely photoshopped and smoothed out.

Edit:
I realized something that dawned on me, soon after I posted. I had not intentionally set out or seek in placing Clinton under the picture of the lovely female headshot you posted. It just sort of happened that way :(

Peter I posted a second shot, and the actual dimensions of the first shot, (24 x 30 mm), inviting people w/ scanners to find a similarly sized shot and then give it their best effort, (both scanning, and image processing), to bring it up to full screen. I also asked any takers to detail their methods, as I detailed mine.

There were no takers, so I gathered the topic was of no interest to people here and deleted it. Because there had been initial responses from both KGB and yourself, my posts could not be removed in their entirety, all you can do is edit to remove content. Later when Nohr was experimenting with Spam deletion methods, it became possible to entirely delete an answered post; but impossible to edits posts. During that time I deleted my postings to this thread. When Nohr had to remove his mods to re-enable editing the deleted thread came back at the top of the list. Sorry about that.

Jim,

I heartily do not agree with your actions, I am against it! (:) to use a marx-brothers line).

a) your initial post was indeed very interesting stuff to read. and it contained useful information, something that was "impressive" and surely something that others who will stop by some other time will be happy to read. it got responses. just because the thread did not develop into something you might have wished there is no reason to rewrite history by trying to make it unhappen. that is something known to be some kind of stalinistic approach.

b) now look what your action leaves behind: a tree without roots, limbs missing and just leafs more brown than green. awful to look at and of absolutely no use.

c) how would someone feel who had given answers and spent time and effort (and be it just 5 minutes) to finally find himself hung out of the window? how would you feel? would you the next time think twice to post an answer when you can't be sure if the tread-inventor will turn it into garbage?

although I am absolutely sure that this was not your intention in the end as a by-product your action might be seen as disrespect of those who were committed.

I am sorry that I was not able to join your inquiry into the field of scanning artistry but my experience with scanning is very limited (once a year). nevertheless I would have been an interested reader of what people might had posted.
