Paid a visit to ATI today.

Post by Jim »

Saw a customer service rep there who was fairly helpfull.

@ Me : Recommended driver for 8500LE & 8500DV aiw = Cat 4.10.
Not sure if that means those are the best drivers for Super 7 boards, or the last driver that supports Win98-SE, or the Driver that came w/ the cards when shipped. Will clarify, I have his e-mail address.

@ Me : At AMD site to find older drivers use "Advanced Search"; for 8500 cards search by ID : 737- [1328]

@ Mamba : Best places to get Bios files are :
www.gameguru3d.com - & - wwwguru3d.com

@ Uranium 235 : Re ArtX drivers, he will investigate and get back to me. He has my e-mail address, and I have his.

Will invite him to become a member here, as he would be a valuble info source if he chooses to join.

EDIT : One other interesting piece of info I picked up at ATI was this : They had an internal poster up marked "Confidential" re "Fedex" boxes. Seems ATI thinks the white one are ok to use; but not the brown ones. Photos of both, one saying OK to use, other saying "DO NOT USE". Could be shipping in the brown Fedex boxes results in damaged goods.

Response from Rick re Cat Driver questions :

The boards will not matter, there are no specific drivers for different motherboards or processors, just operating systems and video cards.

In theory you can go up to Catalyst 6.2 with an 8500 series card in XP, but you still have to remain with MMC 9.02.

In Windows 98/ME Catalyst 6.2 and MMC 8.9 are the highest you can go. If you wish to remain with Windows certified drivers Catalyst 2.1 is the highest driver you should use along with the MMC 8.9. For Windows 98 I would recommend the Catalyst 6.2 drivers as the better choice, they are much newer then the last certified drivers and should help with optimization, even though they are not MS certified.

For Windows 98 the drivers and MMC software can be found at the link below.

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/98me ... -98me.html

The archive for the Windows 98 drivers is KB 737-1325, this is where you will find the Catalyst 2.1 drivers for Windows 98.

For AIW based Radeon cards, up to the 8500 and Windows XP you can use Catalyst 6.2 and up to MMC 9.02. I would recommend using Catalyst 4.10, the version released with MMC 9.02 if you do not need the current Catalyst driver for gamming. Installation instructions can be found at www.ati.com/install

I would also recommend using the Control Panel version with the drivers and not the Catalyst Control Centre. It will take up less of your system resources, .Net Framework is not required. If you use the Catalyst 6.2 drivers just use the drivers from the low speed section and do not install Catalyst Control Centre or .Net Framework.

The AMD DVD player requires a built by AMD retail packaged Radeon 9000-X850 or Retail Packaged All in Wonder 9000 series or higher card to install. With your legacy product, I would recommend using a 3rd party DVD player in its place. You can purchase any of the above products CD’s from Shop ATI and it will validate the AMD DVD player if you wish to use this portion of the AMD Multimedia Centre software.

If you are using Gemstar Guide Plus it needs to be installed from the original CD, it is not part of the software you download from AMD. It can be found in the Install\Gemstar directory on the Catalyst CD. As long as you install the Gemstar software before you install the last of the MMC downloads from the above KB article it will show up in the AMD Launchpad.

Catalyst 6.2 can be found in KB article 737-21599

MMC 9.02, along with the DAO/MDAC and Remote Wonder drivers, and Catalyst 4.10 can be found in KB article 737-1328

To find the KB articles;

1. Click on the "Customer Care" bar (second link from the left across the top of the AMD website).

2. In the upper left hand corner, click on the "Advanced Search" link.

3. Under "Search Type:" select "by ID:737"

4. Type in the number [relevant KB Article number] and press the "Enter" button on your keyboard
