"MS" Update

Post by Jim »

I find it is becomming increasingly more difficult to "Update" Windopes 98-SE. Went to do that tonight; and ran into quite a few problems. First, whenever I logged into their site, about 6 times out of 7, I was getting a message to the effect : "Thankyou for your interest in our site; but you should go to the 'MAC Users site', this site is for the users of Windopes."
Every 7th time or so, I would get the Windopes Update site, but then I was having difficulty getting it to work properly. Part of the problem there, is I have to "Update" Windopes 98-SE to some extent before I can load the video card drivers, for my ATI aiw 9000 Pro, or else I get an error message, and the video card driver load fails. It is quite difficult to get the "MS" update site to function properly when you are using 16 colours and 480x640 resolution. They have some of the buttons located off screen; and I found it to be impossible to bring them onscreen.

What I wound up doing was taking a list of all the updates recommended, then searching my old stash of "Update" files to see if I had any of them. Had some of them, and installed them, which turned out to be enough to get my video card driver installed, which in turn allowed me to get the rest of them. Would recommend that anyone still running 98SE get a hold of a complete set of all the "Updates" and keep them against the day when they are no longer available at all. (Typical Moronpoop pressure tactics, BUY Vista!!)

What I did, and recommend, is simply the next time you have occasion to do an install and update, is before you do the "Update", use MS Clean Manager to clean out all your temporary internet files, then after updating, open MS Clean Manager again, and click the view files button, then browse through the temporary internet download folders looking for the "MS Update" download files; and cut and paste them into safe keeping elsewhere.

Jim, I have a CD I got free from Microsoft a few years ago that contains about 95% of the updates needed after a clean Windows98 install. It's got updates for IE 6.0, media player and most of the security updates. It really speeds things up for me. I can burn you a copy if you want to try it.
The name on the CD is "Microsoft Windows Security Update CD, February 2004".

This is what I got:

You can't get this CD from Microsoft anymore.

Could use that, thanks!! I have a number of them that I have obtained using my own method; but who knows which ones have been superceeded by newer ones etc. Will P.M. you a snail mail address. Thanks again.

By the way the list that I wrote of "Updates" currently recommended is as follows :
KB918547; KB908519; KB918439; KB916281; KB837009; KB917344; KB911562; KB913433; 816093 & Security Update March 7 2002.

What I do is first install the "Unofficial Service Pack" ... "sesp201en.exe" because I have found that the unofficial service pack will overwrite newer files w/ older ones without mentioning it. Installing it first gives it nothing newer to overwrite. Having done that, then I install MDAC2.8 (MDAC_TYP.EXE); reason for that is I have found that left to their own devices "MS" will sometimes give you MDAC2.1 instead.

Once that is done, THEN I go to "Windopes Update" to get the rest, which is what is listed above.

@ Shaddam : thanks, good site. Catch is sooner or later MS will lower the boom on 98. When that happens, best to have all updates stockpiled and saved. Also "Unofficial service pack" overwrites newer files w/ older versions. Got to watch that, cause it DOES cause problems.
