Maybe I found the King of the hill??

Post by mamba »

I remeber a guy called Shaddam who tried to make a 5700 work on a MVP3 system.
But he was out of luck.
I get the chance to test a Sparkle 5700AGP 128Mbyte and it works perfectly without problems.
But what make me really happy is the performance of this card.
In a word, FAST.

I read the DonPedro results on videocards and the Geforce3Ti seems to be the best videocard for gaming, so I tested a Creative GeForce3-TI500 on a K6-III@500MHz that has more or less the same performance of a K6-II+@600 (tell me if I'm wrong).

http://www.k6plus.com/index.php?name=PN ... =videocard

I get score of 2300 (average) with all possible optimizations and with the fastest driver that it happened to be the one provided with the creative CD (tried all DonPedro's drivers).
So my goal was 2300.

I installed the FX5700 and removed the K6-III450@500 for a more stable K6-II+ 550@600.
The first impression was that the K6-II+ was a bit slower, but anyway I was for the VGA.
The system:

MVP3G2
K6-II+ 550@600MHz
1x256Mbyte RAM PC133 Infineon CL2 Sync
Sparkle FX5700 AGP 128Mbyte
AWE64GOLD ISA
NE2000 ISA LAN CARD
HD Maxtor 40Gbyte
Samsung CDRW
LG DVDRW

Windows Xp PRO SP2
Via 4in1_443
Detonators FX 56.72 (the latest for GeforceFX) WHQL

The card has been installed without a single glitch.
I noticed the Ti500 was really hot even in idle mode, this one is really COLD, feels like the K6-II+ under the Titan cooler...
The visual quality is far better than the ti500 one, I can see the difference even on the 2D desktop.
Started 3DMark2001pro, 2670 3Dmarks.

I think that with the proper driver (maybe an older one) and some K6 optimization I can reach and go beyond 3000. Not mentioning further overclocking.
Last but not least, I bought it for 15 euro, a lucky price, but we can't go so far from it.

Given those preliminary results I can say that ths card is one of the best VGA for K6 systems, in terms of performance, quality, heat and energy consumption.

If someone would suggest some wpcredit optimization working for my MVP3G2 I would appreciate.

very interesting, mamba!

can you give us some more information on that sparkle vga? what is the total power consumption and at which frequencies the chip and the rams are running? if its a 128bit based unit why it stays quite cold?

please post all ur 3dmark2001pro scores. as it is the pro version, there are 4 more tests giving points, dx8 is supported as well so why that graphic card should work faster than a geforce 2? i mean the k6 processor could be the bottleneck, if it cannot handle all requests from the graphic unit, u cant get the max video performance.

@Mamba

I have the EP-MVP3G2 board on my set up at home with some wpcredit tweaks. I'll let you know what they are when I get home. Please be aware that some of the settings may be dependant upon the Dram used. Mine are 2 x Hynix pc133 256mb cl2. I get the following Everest scores with my set up with a K6-3+/450 @ 550 (5.5x100)

MR/MW/ML (292/152/224)

What are your Everest scores at the moment?

Stedman.

First:

Sorry Kachiwachi, the post was by DonPedro!!
I edited the first post.

Second:

I tried to optimize the drivers switching thru several version (beta or WHQL) and by now the best result come with the 52.16 WHQL.
Just changing the drivers I got such improvement...

Image

Over 3200 3Dmarks...Really good don't you think?
And again without k6 optimization.

Third:

I'll test everest as soon as I can and for the Sparkle I can say that the model number is SP8836-DT/128MB DDR.
Don't know why it stays so cold, maybe the cooler is quite efficient, but I notice that is smaller that the GF-TI500 one.

The frequencies at default are 400/500 for chip and memory respectively, maybe the precedent owner has edited the original bios.

My Everest result (Everest home edition, last version) are:

MR311/MW127/ML216

Maybe I can work on those results with Wpcredit somehow?

I'll post the complete 3dmark results as soon as I can (hoping I haven't to type every single one... I'k not findng a way to copy and paste!).

post ur wpcredit 1x1.
as i got the mvp3c2, it should be quite similar. i would advise some changes worked fine for me ...
to copy and paste it use cpuz - under registry dumb you can safe the data in a .txt file. the host bridge registry entries are the ones to post here.

here are mines:

@mamba

Are you sure that is a correct dump of your PCI to host bridge settings? Mine looks very similar to that shown by Kalabok.

yup, mamba,

watch out for this first four offsets: 06 11 97 05 - the via apollo (m)vp3 "fingerprint" if you want. copy that ones please.
you copied the ones for the power management controller (allthough it has the same name - my fault, sorry).

Strange...
I was it was the host bridge dump, I got it from the cpuZ txt. Anyway I'll check it again.

@Stedman
The Dram I use is a single 256Mbyte Infineon CL2 133Mhz Sync.

I'm trying to go up with the FSB, but my system freezes even at 103Mhz FSB...
MVP3G2 is very stable, but is not an overclocker's champion maybe...

great results mamba!

would be very intressted in the concrete driver combination, which via driver and which nvidia, which windows (2000?)... my overall result was, that there seems to be a problem especially with win98se not really the hardware...

for comparision here again my tries

@mamba

What multiplier are you using for the103 fsb? If it is 6x it might be too much for the cpu under stress.

I can get 618Mhz by either 6x103 or by using 5.5x112. The 112mhz I can get with the onboard L3 cache on as well. however when the cpu is subjected to intense graphics output it crashes. My suspicion is that the K6 cpu just does not like heat and it is just getting too hot at high speed when under hard stress.

Try the 103 or 112 speed using a lower mutiplier to see if it is the cpu or the board that is giving you grief.

I can do most mundane tasks such as office and internet work at 6x103 and 5.5x112 until the cows come home. My P5A board runs at 6x105 but again if it is subjected to a graphics intense bench it crashes.

Both the Epox board and the P5a will run Ok at higher fsb than 100 if the cpu speed is kept below 600.

Delidding might work with a suitable cooler or maybe water cooling. I might try it sometime.
