Upgraded Presario from k6-2 400 to k3-450 now problems
Upgraded Presario from k6-2 400 to k3-450 now problems
I wanted my Compaq Presario 1690 laptop to perform a little better so I purchased a AMD k6-3 450 to up the performance. originally I was using the AMD k6-2 400 without a problem (stock in most 1690's), I could even overclock it a bit to 450 with no problems. Well I installed the k3 leaving the factory setting's intact which is 2.2 v 100 mhz x4 on the motherboard(the k63 is 2.2-2.4 core) and it boots up fine , but when I open a application the computer freezes. I tried every single dipswitch setting in the service manual and what I could find on the net that others have used but still the same problems. Sometimes it will work for awhile than it will freeze. I have a socket 7 cpu heatsink and fan installed in my laptop so I dont see heat as the problem .
I also underclocked it to see what was the deal and had it clocked @ 188 mhz and although it did run ok eventually it froze when opening another window.
The only big difference in the CPU's is the k6-3's have 256 mb l2 cache and th k6-2 400s dont. I have adequite memory and I guess I am just in a slump. I paid good money and bought it from a reputable seller that states it passed all the testing. i did notice however that on some of the pins I noticed some blackness towards the base of some pins and kinda a little corrosion when I recieved the unit.
Why the freezing? Is the CPU just not processing correcty?
I was told and I figure it would be a plug and play type deal but I was sadly dissappointed
If anyone has any ideas please let me know and if you need any more info to help me figure out this problem just ask
My Motherboard says it can handle up to 475 mhz and everything is set so it should of just ran normal but failed
Thanks in advance

RE: Upgraded Presario from k6-2 400 to k3-450 now problems
Try setting the processor voltage to 2.4v. If that doesn't solve the problem, then perhaps the processor has been damaged by overclocking, or exposure to water etc. (Blackness & corrosion). K6-3s of the non plus variety are supposed to run at 2.4v as far as I know. You might conceivably be able to get away with 2.3v; but 2.2v is plainly not enough.

tell us the exact chip description, plz.
there are three different k6-3 450 cpus, each needs other voltage for running well.
maybe you allready have seen this site:
http://www.mgrudkin.clara.net/Presario.htm
it states your presario supports a maximum speed of 600mhz. maybe you did change the position some of the 6-10 dip switches?
it does not sound to me as a defective processor. that one freezes even at loading the os or in bios. i would suggest a voltage or temperature problem.

@ Kalabok : He said he got a K6-3 rated 2.2-2.4v. That cannot be a K6-3+, it has to be a plain K6-3. They should have 2.4v. Unfortunately the link that you posted does not give settings for 2.4v. Finally it is highly unlikely that he messed with the number 6-10 settings because they pertain to what type of screen he has, and if he screwed that up he would get no video period, methinks.

This is Xiled83 under my original name KHPower , Sorry for any confusion
I have the model AMD-K6-III/450AFX 2.2v core/3.3v
I know people have done this on the exact model but after some research I think they were using the plus models. This has the link I used for the dipswitch http://www.mgrudkin.clara.net/Presario.htm
I cant seem to figure 2.4 volts but got 2.3 v.
Also , This is the explanation I got on another forum , tell me what you think http://www.overclock.net/amd-general/25 ... x-now.html
Also , I think that heat is not the problem cause it eveny happens at 400 mhz @ the windows desktop. , the heatsink and fan seem to work although only held by a strip of themal stuff
If you notice in the dipswitch settings , there is none for just 2.0 for the multiplier , but I have found out that this lappie will not read 2.0 correctly and will actually read it at 6.0 x
I never change 6-10 , you can do 10 without any problems either way.
The proccessor is fine I believe and no damge cause it did this the first time I installed it at factory settings and I got it from a good dealer
If any of you have any suggestions let me hear them
thanks everyone

Edit on the 2.0 for the multiplier. By doing his configuration for 2.0 as the multiplier , it actually is 2.5 so that part of his info must be wrong.
I have tried to figure how to get up to 2.4 volts but I jst cant get it
1.8v 1=off 2=off 3=on 4=off
2.0v 1=off 2=on 3=off 4=off
2.1v 1=on 2=off 3=off 4=off
2.25v 1=off 2=off 3=off 4=off
2.3v 1=off 2=off 3=off 4=on
I fI could just get it to run I would be happy , and I have another CPU on the way a 475 plus that is compatable.

what the bios tells you on boot? does it recognize the cpu well?
to know, if there can be a problem with the agp/pci speed, u need to tell the specs of one part on the mobo - the pll, which controls fsb, pci and agp speeds. if you have free access to the mobo, tell me.
the best you can do is replacing the k6-3 and try out with same dip switches your k6-2. with the 66mhz x 6 (x2) 400mhz @2,25V. if the problem still exists ... hmm. give back the cpu, maybe?
ah - which model is your k6-2 400? afq or afr?

I dont see my bios screen , I havent for about a year , I know its Phoenix , but I couldnt tell ya if it recognizes the CPU well.kalabok wrote:what the bios tells you on boot? does it recognize the cpu well?

I got to the bios screen and it goes away really fast .
Where do I find the pll? I have open access cause its opened 24/7
(No keyboard , cover,) And the desktop heat sink and fan is installed
I dont think I can hit 66 mhz
75MHz 4=on 5=on
83MHz 4=off 5=on
95MHz 4=on 5=off
100MHz 4=off 5=off
And I am using a choice of 2 different CPU's right now the K6-2/400ACK(currently)2.0v , the other K6-2/400AFK 2.2v
Thankyou
ah, sorry,
i was sure there is a 66mhz setting ...
ok. to find a pll search for a 1cm wide and 2cm long black rectangle chip from ICS (i guess thats the manufacturer). it has about 20 pins on each side and is located near a silver, more or less oval, frequency crystal (reference oscillator). there is written something like 14.3181 mhz on it.
look here:
http://www.podien.de/FSB.HTM#finding
tell me the exact numbers written on the pll.
but ... i still have the feeling that this k6 III 450afx produces too much heat. datasheets states, it produces 21W of heat, your 400ack only 16 ...
try installing a small program on your computer - notebook hardware control 2.0. the cpu temp should not exceed 50 C ...

I found something that has those numbers on it its about 1 cm by 2 cm it says
14318
KSS 9FF
But it doesnt have but 2 pins holding it in , 1 on one side and 1 on the other. There is 2 kinda big heat shield things and I dont know whats under there.
Also there is a chip that is fairly big that says : ISSI
If none of them are it I will keep looking and in the meantime I will install that program Thankyou

With appologies to Kalabok. I was wrong. Didn't even know there was a 2.2v K6-3.

today I put in a K6-2 533 and have it up to 501 mhz and it seems to run well , the fan ad heatsink are doing there job. Tommorrow I will be buying some thermal grease . The only problem I get sometimes is when I restart the computer i get the error saying "Windows has recovered from a serious error" or something like that. So i got sufficient cooling.
I will post some pics of my laptop soon so everyone can see how it is set up.
i also have a K6-3 400mhz 2.4 v. I would like to try
Thanks everybody

When looking for that chip I didnt find anything but the ISSI. I couldnt even find the crystal thing anywhere. looking down at the mobo , on the right hand side where the DVD drive would be there is a memory stick and about 3 silver heat sinks , would it be under there? and on the left side I have a modem(dont know why) and my wireless card. Unless it is towards the back then I would have to dismantle my lappie. I do , however have a Copmpaq Presario 1200 laptop motherboard that is almost identical to my 1690. I will use that as reference and try to find that chip.
