Epox MVP3G5 K6-3+ and Tillamook compatibility

Post by moondog »

Hello together,

on Ebay I stumbled over a K6-3+ 400 ATZ that I catched for 2,50 Euros, unfortunatly he wont run on my MVP3G5. Even if the seller said, the CPU was ok I hardly doubt that, as the CPU was really cocking after some seconds and the system wont boot up as all. I have installed the latest BIOS made in 2001 (maybe a patched one for the MVP3C?) and I know that the mainboard offers the right voltage, as I tried out 1,8 Volt with another K6-2. The ATZ needs 1,6 Volt, but I doubt he would be harmed by the 1,8 Volt the MVP3G5 only offers as lowest Vcore. Even though the board should be able the run those CPU´s I wonder what may happen to a prozessor the board really don´t know? Will it get fired with the wrong voltage maybe or something like that?

I decided to buy a new ATZ lately and I´m waiting to get it atm, as I´m not very happy with the K6-3 400 AHX that I´m running at 450 Mhz at 2,8 Volt, eurf... I just hope that I wont burn the new ATZ away...

Apart from this I wonder if the board will run with Intel Tillamook CPU´s. At the moment I matched it to get a P233 MMX to run rockstable at 300Mhz with 2,9 Volt (@3x100) and the performance isn´t that bad. So I wonder what speed would be possible with faster Pentium MMX CPU´s then.

Thanx in advance,

Eric

My advice Eric, would be to get a K6-3+ 450 ACZ, or possibly a K6-3+ 500 ANZ. They shouldn't cost too much these days, and both can be easily OCed a little over 600MHz. The ATZ was "The bottom of the line" as far as K6-3+ processors are concerned, with the highest chance of problems reaching 600MHz, and in your case, apparently outright defective. I just hope you didn't damage your mobo with the thing.

Hi Jim,

atm I didn´t thought to push the ATZ to 600 Mhz, 500 or 550 would be fine as well, I will see. To get the 450 ACR isn´t that cheap over here, as the only offered ones came from the US, others from China and to be honest, I wouldn´t pay about 50 Euros for a socket 7 cpu incl. shipping, I´m not hat freaky  Atm, someone over here in Germany offers a K6-3+ 550 ACR for horrible 99 Euros... I doubt he will find a buyer.

Greetings,

Eric

K6-2+

Post by Stedman5040 »

Eric,

If K6-3+ are expensive then try for a K6-2+. These are usually a lot cheaper to buy and the performance hit is usually in the order of 5% for the same clock speed. A K6-2+ at 600MHz should perform about the same as a K6- III at 550MHz. All K6 plus cpu's I have reach 550 MHz at 2.0v and a lot of them will do 600 MHz at 2.0v as well. The K6-III+ 400ATZ I have does 550MHz and not 600MHz at 2.0v. Since the plus cores are all the same die they should all hit 2.0v with no problems. The fastest I have had one do on the Epox EP MVP3-G2 board I have is 618 MHz (6x103).

Stedman.

He now has his ATZ working @ 600MHz @ 2.1V which is normal for this sort of thing. Re working better at 600MHz than at 550MHz, not true. For some strange reason perfomance is maximized using the 5.5 multiplier. Probably something in the processor was optimized to run best that way.

Hello together, again ;)

I did some overclocking and got the ATZ to run up to 616 Mhz so far (5,5x112), but I need already 2,4 volt to get him stable at this speed, but so far the temperature seems to be not -the- problem - under load (3D Mark) CPUCool shows up a max temperature of nearly 40 degrees but I have to admit the room in my cellars where the machine is running has only about 15 degrees. I decided to use a bigger cooler and will go for a big socket A cooler at next.

The CPU runs stable @ 600 Mhz with 2,1 Volt but performs better at 560 Mhz at the same voltage.

On 3D Mark 99 Max I reached about 7800 CPU Marks @ 600 Mhz, 8000@560 Mhz and stunning 8700@616 Mhz by an overall score of just 2445 3D Marks.

(Test setup appart from the ATZ: MVP3G5, 256 MB MT PC100 CL2,0, Voodoo 3 3000@180 Mhz using Amiga Merlin 3.11 R Driver, XP Pro SP2, DX 9.0c, Via 4in1 V4.43, 3D Mark 99 Max with XP Patch)

Eric

Well done Eric !! If you think that 5.5 x 112 is over stressing things, try backing off the FSB to the next lower setting still using the 5.5 multiplier. I dont know what settings that mobo has, some have 103, some have 105, etc. But the 5.5 multiplier works best on a K6-3+ processor, so use it with the highest FSB speed that you think is safe in the long term.
