What HDD manager to skip the BIOS restriction in HDD size?

Post by moondog »

Hello together,

as I don´t get my 80 GB HDD to run correctly on my IPC Powernote500 I wonder, what possibilities I have to make it possible anyway? The biggest HDD-size in the BIOS seems to be something around 65 GB, this suggests it can be use more, but it doesn´t want to do it. I always get several crashes while trying to install XP on it - as I got the installation finished with the original 6 GB HDD I can say, that the actual RAM and the XP CD aren´t the problem in here. While the XP-installation-routine matches it to recognize the whole HDD space it finally crashes while copying the installation files to the HDD. The harddisk is ok as well (used before in my P3 laptop and it is checked).

So what? Please help!

Thanx in advance,

Eric

You can usually download an "Overlay" program from the HDD manufacturers site that will let you get around this limitation. Apart from that the only way I know to solve the problem is update the bios to a version that recognizes larger HDDs.

Sometimes it is possible to install the OS on a small partition in the beginning of the harddrive. Later when you have the OS up & running you can make a second partition covering the rest of the disk that you only access from within the OS. This way you avoid the problems associated with overlay programs.

Hi DrSwizz,

after uncounted failed tries I matched it today to get the installation routine run properly after I´ve made a 20 GB partition on the HDD and left the rest unpartitioned... so far it seems to run as he copies the files properly so far...

Furthermore I got a bios update that recognizes the CPU at least as K6-2+ now. So it seems I get this little devil up and running in the end... hopefully!

Thanx for your tip!

Greetings,

Eric

Hi DrSwizz,

yep, he finished the installation right and runs without problems (just need a proper driver for the soundcard then) - XP recognized all devices properly, even the ATI Rage Mobility M...

But now the next question: what about the other unused 60 GB?! I wonder if it could make problems with the installation in the end if I set up another partition? Has anyone experiences in this point?

Thanx in advance,

Eric

Dr Swiss said that you could use Windopes to make another partition, (that would only be accessible from within Windopes), and use the rest of your drive that way.

Ooops,

I missed that... ok, let´s have a try.

Today I got 2 sticks of 256 MB PC 133 RAM but I was running into another problem now. At first, one stick doesn´t fit right as the accu housing is in the way... ok, can be reworked. But after playing around with it for a while I checked another problem: if booth slots are populated, the boot up screen and the BIOS telling me, that 512 MB RAM are installed, XP itself only shows up 256... the first boot with both slots populated was quite fast so that I was thinking, all memory will be used... untill I checked the system information... now I was playing around for a while and each boot is awfully slow... has anyone an idea? It doesn´t matter what stick is installed in what slot... it´s a hell of a boot sequence...

Just wanted to point out that the ALI mini ide driver drops down the harddisk speed a lot, after kicking it from the harddisk, the NB seem to work much faster again and windows starts about 4times (!) faster than with ALI/ULI driver...
