"Why not use a Banshee?"

Because I have an Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz@1.35GHz and a 19" monitor capable of 1600x1200! The Banshee is just slightly underpowered for my setup. I must have the fastest Banshee system this side of Pluto. I have to admit though, for it's age it hangs in there pretty well but I I'm only really able to play games at 800x600 smoothly. Sometimes 1024x768 is alright, depending on the game.

"BTW Nohr, you must be my doppelganger. We both have Banshees. We both have a K6-3+ 450@550 residing on an AOpen AX59Pro. And we both like Diablo2. Hehehe!"

As they say, great minds think alike. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Banshee upside yo' head!!!

Post by Petro89 »

Hehehe!

I meant why not use a Banshee for my setup. Using one on yours would definately make it the most powerful Banshee system in the universe.

My system with the Banshee is actually a pretty good performer as well. It plays every game I have well-at least 800x600. The list includes Q3A, UT, Diablo2, and even NFSPU.

I'm sure it'll soon not be able to perform all that well on new games. However, I am one that looks for playability and fun rather than the appearance of a game. I'll stick to the classics I already have.

Glide and 3Dfx rule!

Nohr, you rule too! I think I'd be the only other person crazy enough to put a Banshee on a system like that.

Ahh Toaster. I do not see any possible way for anyone new to be able to vote, or am I missing something.

You're friend and neighbor

AZK6er

I'm not crazy, I'm poor!

My Banshee works decently for what I play, UT and Diablo II mostly lately. Glide is a nice perk. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> My 3DMark scores are pathetic though, imagine that heh.

It used to overclock to around 114MHz/129MHz, but now it won't do it without crashing. I think the GPU fan is flaking out on me, it doesn't appear to be spinning as fast as it should.

Which model do you have, the Diamond Monster Fusion? That's the only one I know of that came stock with a fan. Or did you add one to it?

I have the Creative Banshee-PCI. It's ok, but I'm sure it wouldn't overclock well due to the crummy little heatsink on it. I suppose I could add better cooling, but I'm too lazy. Also, I use every slot on the board, and adding a fan would probably take up another slot. Do you think I could somehow put one on the back of the card?

Diablo2 in Glide is much better than D3D. It really looks more 3D-ish and smoooooooth.

I have a Diamond Monster Fusion AGP 16MB with stock cooling, which isn't much. I've pryed off the heatsink and removed all the old crusty factory-applied glue junk and put on my own thermal paste. Didn't seem to help much at all though and the glue was rather hard to get off the chip.

If your Banshee is in the top slot you could try one of those AGP Airlift things. It's basically just a 60mm fan that sits on a 60mm-80mm fan adapter which sits on the back of the card. Here's a couple reviews I dug out of our news archives so you can check it out.

<a href="http://www.bluescreenofdeth.net/reviews ...
<a href="http://www.jsihardware.com/reviews.php? ...

Or if you want to go the heatsink/fan route, a Thermaltake Crystal Orb would probably fit the bill nicely. They seem to be pretty slim and I don't believe it'd interfere with your other cards. Some more reviews for you and the manufacturer's link.

<a href="http://www.overclockercafe.com/Reviews/ ...
<a href="http://www.gideontech.com/reviews/ttcry ...
<a href="http://www.thermaltake.com/crystalorb.h ...

I've heard that Diablo II looks and runs much better in Glide. I haven't tried it in D3D so I'll just take everyone's word for it. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

One hot banshee

Post by Petro89 »

Nohr,

Actually, My K6-3 450/Banshee system is on an old AOpen AX5T-2 (Intel TX-based board). Thus there's no AGP slot, and the Banshee is in the top PCI one. However, the tests showed that the airlift thing actually raise temperatures in most cases, so I don't really see the use in that.

That crystal orb looks like an option-only 1.5 cm thick. Maybe I'll check it out.

Thanks for the links and the advice!

D2 in D3D looks a lot like Diablo1.

The Banshee's gone now. Now using a Gainward GF3 Ti200. Noticed an ever so slight speed increase.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz@1.35GHz (9x150)
Iwill KK266
256MB Crucial PC133 CAS2
Gainward GeForce3 Ti200 4ns 235/525
Gateway EV910 19" monitor (1600x1200 .26mm)
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB 7200rpm
Windows XP Professional

ATI is best buck bang

Post by io333 »

since i never updated:

i lost the savage4suck and put a RadeonVE in each of my socketA boxes.

One is a DDR32meg@183 (ATI mfr)

One is a SDR32meg@140 (who knows who made it)

Both have TV out.

Both seem to have essentially identical performance in games and fantastic output to both TV and monitor.

One was $70 and the other was $45 so i'm not complaining.

I was just playing alien v predator2 at 640x480x32 highest detail & it was smooth as silk. Same settings at 800x600 start to get a bit jumpy.

But how the heck do you play AvP2? I mean, I'm supposed to get to a circuit board to get the door open with my hacking device, but i can't get the stupid control panel open. I guess i'm just stupid

I sold the R8500 to a friend a while back. Now running a V3-3500TV card in the Athlon box. I also have a Kyro I and a GeFarce2MX200 lying around doing nothing, plus some older cards. And I have two V2's on the way.

I'll probably go get another one once they go way down in price, but I found out I had better uses for $200 than running the Nature Test in 3dMark2K1. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I dropped from about 10,000 3dMarks in 3dMark2000 to about 3700 though...lol.

FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

Matrox

Post by noryb »

I've been running a Matrox G400 single head for over 2 years. Wonderful card for me, noticably easier on my eyes than the old Diamond card I was running.
