I agree, everything looks pretty good except the K6 logo. Looks great, I like the format, but I agree that a little more contrast wouldn't hurt.

Overall, it's a nice shop window. Lots of goodies on show in the "taster" column on the right,

But I do tend to agree with the other comments. It does need a bit of glitter, like all good shop windows, to attract the passing punter in through the door. I think that a bolder heading would not go amiss. And there's nothing wrong with a bit a highlighting of the more important or more interesting features.

Sure, it's what's inside that really counts, and the dedicated followers of this site will not really mind how it looks, just as long as the navigation is easy. But I assume that what we would all like to see is a significant increase in the size of our community.

Hope the people who've worked on this project will take these comments in the positive spirit in which they are made. I know from experience that it's always difficult to shape and present new ideas to the wider audience. However hard you try, you'll never come up with the final answer on day one. I say, get on with it, and fine tune as it goes along.

Thoughts....

Post by His Royal Majesty King V »

I'll admit I'm nitpicky. Overall I do like the more professional look.

HOWEVER......

1) Text size: The text size is *somewhat* on the small side for Windows users, though even to me pretty readable. Italics in that size tends to make things a bit harder. However, if you've ever used Unix/Linux, fonts tend to come out notably smaller. Definitely like the use of a sans-serif font (Helvetica, Arial, whatever it's called) rather than a serif font like Times. Still, I'd like to see the default font larger.

I realize of course the irony that this font size is about the same as what I have on the compatibility list. I have never been happy with that myself, but wanted to avoid the table being wider than the typical screen and forcing users to "side-scroll"

2) Brightness. Black text on white has been done in order to get that "text on paper" look. In theory, makes sense. In practice, it's painful to the eyes. Paper doesn't actually emit light the way a screen does. I'd like to see something a little gentler on the retinas.

That's about it for me so far. I hope it doesn't come off as harsh/nasty critical. Just some things that I know bothered me in particular, and brought me a bit to mind of when the forum colors were being redone. I was seriously considering re-doing the compatibility list with the forum's current color sheme as a basis.

new look

Post by feizex »

looking good.

maybe a little less stark white, you still need the contrast, just not ALL of it. Keep anything boxed (line border around it) with white background and anything not a very light aqua (IE offwhite).

Also the black K6plus up the top does not look clean, the shutter gaps are too small so it looks like it has been drawn in black ink on blotting paper. Maybe that's cos of jpeg compression? Either way the black looks out of place. You could make it a Dark navy blue, just to take the edge off it, anything other than black...

My main concern is that we are a pro AMD site and we are using intel colours (blues). We had better include the light green AMD Icon somewhere. And or make the K6plus title bright green.

functionality...

Post by feizex »

As for functionality, How many things do we have to sign up for?

There's chat, forums, and what's that create account link in the top left.

I think that we should make it as easy as possible for people to register. That includes haveing one registration for the whole site. I know that's difficult, so if we can't have that then we should at least make it clear what they're registered for.

And what does "who's online" refer to? Who is in the chat or who is in the forums or who is viewing the page? If we can tell who's in all three then we should maybe list them.

Also I would like to see a link to the current chat stats in the chat box.

The logo shown in the screenshot is purely temporary, I promise. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I like the blue colors and have never really considered that to be a nod to Intel. Besides, most other AMD sites already got the green thing going, it's overdone. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

A single login will work between the site and the forum. Everyone will have to register just once on the site.

Currently the site and forum have seperate "Who's online" lists. I'll see what I can do to combine them.

When a user is logged in to the site their nick is automatically placed in the Chat edit box. A simple button press gets them in to chat.

Good idea about the chat stats link.
-=-=-=-=-
Nohr's Rigs

Since you've mentioned the logo is going to change, and you are looking for a new background, the rest of it's looking good to me.
Epox MVP3G5, K6-3+450@618, 256MB SDRAM, CL GF2 GTS, IBM 60GXP 20GB, Fortissimo II Sound

ASUS TX97-XE, K6-3+450@500, 256MB SDRAM, Voodoo4 4500 PCI, WD 40GB, SB AWE64 Sound

ASUS A7N8X Dlx, Athlon XP 2400+, 512 Crucial DDR, Radeon 8500, WD 80GB SE, onboard sound/LAN

I was playing with paint the other day and it looked like that, except for the boxed areas. If you fill the background only (BTW I am not sure how easy it would be to reproduce in HTML) then the boxes (ones down the left and right and the welcome box) are still white and it looks like a good contrast. Give it a go in paint and you'll see what I mean.

And yes blue I know MSpaint is lame but it was taking too long to DL psp, so I played with paint.

The Logo still needs SOME colour though!
