LIL HD.

NOW THAT I'M APPARENTLY THRU
SOME TOUGH TIMES WITH A PCCHIPS
DEFCTV. MOBO. NOW RUNNING A-1 WITH
A K6-3-450+@600 AND HAVEN'T SEEN A
gpf/BSOD FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, I INSTALLED
A NEW 15gb mAXTR. AND LOADED UP WIN 98 ETC.
NOW..SHOULD I KEEP THE OLD 1gB. THAT WENT THRU
hELL FOR ARCHIVING OR WILL IT JUST KINDA
BOG DOWN THE WHOLE SYSTEM, I REMEMBER READING
SOMETHING ABOUT RUNNING W/ AN ATA100 AND
CAUSING SOME PROBLEMS? ..I WOULDN'T INSTALL
THIS 1 gB. , BUT SINCE IT HAD ENDURED SOME RUGGED
TREATMENT AND IT SEEMS TO PERFORM O.K., I WAS
JUST GOING TO LEAVE IT ALONE...IT DOES REPORT SOME BAD
SECTORS, BUT THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED SINCE THE LAST
FDISK/FORMAT 4-5 MONTHS AGO!

ANY IDEAS APPRECIATED

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/ufelldad.showP ... Does your mobo have 2 IDE connectors? Hook the other hard drive up to the second channel; this should not hurt the primary ide performance any.

1 GB is a lot of space for general files and such. Might be a good place to back up your important letters and such.
My sig

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/umrtoastz.show ... uage=EN>Mr Toastz at: 8/8/01 9:23:03 pm

Toast I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but backing up on a drive that you *think* may be flaky is a BAD idea. what's the point of backing up?

2nd controller is definitely the way to go though if you do want to run it....

Besides that it's gonna be a while before you fill that 15Gig.

So I say just give the other one to a friend. Or keep it as a spare to test mobo's or something.

A few bad bits does not a toasted hard drive make.

He said the 1 gb drive seemed to work fine, so putting driver downloads and such on it in case the other drive fails is not a bad idea. I haven't had a hard drive failure in a while (almost 2 years) myself, but I lost a lot of data the last time I did.
My sig

Thanks for your answers and opinions here!

My main concern was running a slow drive in the same system
with a ATA100..it seems very difficult to define HD cached performence. I'm still booting-up on the 1GB.
A few MBS probably won't matter. So I'll just leave well enough alone for now. since My k6+ system is running great!

-----------------------------------------------------------
The comment re: "1GB being a lot of space" was appreciated and I wish the HD mnfctrs would take note of that , since that's about how much they short you as per their advertised sizes, it used to be you always got a few mgb's more but now the ad-capacity is stretched to the maximum imaginable? diag. size...which shorts you about a GB. or so overall..
.Ex. I've got two-20GB Maxtr in this Epox\935Athlon system they both only=19GB on the Explorer-property page..So an advertised 40gb. shrinks to 38GB..2 FULL GB's LESS!!!!!
The 15GB's also loose a GB. to 14GB????

This is no big deal for me but it is a petpeeve that companies can continue to mislead everyone in their ads.I would still
have bought them at 14gb and 19gb, if all mnfctrs would
be equally and totally honest in their ads..

..Sandra will complain about wasted space etc. re: the FAT32 cluster size thing.

So much for my Venting....Sorry!!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------

A true 1GB. of Free Usable HD space is quite a bit when all is
said and done...so my being resourceful(cheap) is appreciated
by someone else.....

Thanks again

Don

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/ufelldad.showP ... Something you can do to maximize space on big disks

Post by Mr Toastz »

When formatting a disk over 8192 MB, the minimum cluster size raises from 4kb to 8kb or higher (at least on Maxtor Disks). This results in a slight loss in space.

Now I admit that if you have a 46.1gb drive (like myself) you may not notice this for a while. Nonetheless, breaking down the disk into 8192 MB partitions will drop this minimum cluster size back down to 4kb. This also gives you the added protection of having other partitions still accessable should one partition fail, and gives you an easy way to reinstall windows (format c: does not format the other partitions).

You can even copy the entire Windows CD directly onto a partition, at which point your system treats it as a Windows CD (makes installing hardware go a lot faster, let me tell you!). You can still store data on this 'windows cd' partition, too (recommend putting it in a separate folder though).

Thanks Mr.Toast,

I used to partition everything @512mb. to utilize the most space possible, but since the bigger 12-20GB's HD's got so cheap I quit partitioning...I just don't like to waste the time searching or keeping track of stuff...I think my clusters are using as much as 16kb's ,or whatever win98-FAT32 dictates..

This all kinda contributes to my point about advertiser's using hype to sell overall-imagined size ,,.If they all advertised the net-minimum formatted space,The newer ATA-100-HD's would still be a good deal no matter how you configure or utilize the space. Small files just use up more space, but for my usage it really doesn't matter that much....

I've also have had A Win98disk FOLDER on all my systems for conveniance and to speed up access to Win98cd stuff with updates etc, + I have off97 and some other CD's copied to folders.

venting!!-----------------------------------------------
I haven't missed the partition thing even for copying-
burning CD's ,,,,,You can just use folders with no need for
PARTITIONS(which were in my opinion nothing more than DOS
folders and part of the original BillGates curse.A lot of $ & hrs.
were spent on softwr./hdwr to satisfy this operating
system quirk.!)
--------------------------------------------------------

I'm curious -What size did Maxtor advertise your 46.1GB and what does explorer(in the RH column) report as it's usable size? Maybe you got yours before they started all this
flaky advertising...

Best regards

Don

Actually it was advertised as a 40 GB drive with 5 bonus GB's included...
My sig

i havn't really read this thread carefully 'cause i'm too fried from too much sh*t happening today, but just wanted to note that if you're running a highATA drive on a low speed (e.g., DMA33) board, go to the drive mfr's web site & snag their dos utility to knock the drive down to the max speed your board can support. also, if you have a via chipset & more than one HD you MUST have at least the 4.32 4in1 drivers or you WILL have HD corruption issues.

I once got Win95 onto a 40MB hard disk, with room to spare....

I checked out Maxtor's latest website and
did a little research and found they are apparently
concentrating their tech. efforts for speed.size and
economy...EX.one of their newer model 541dx= a single platter thin 3/4 inch case drive w/20-40Gb at competitive pricing.
I have had excellent warranty replacement service from Maxtor . I also have a couple of WD...all have performed great, but of course the newest Maxtr-drvs benchmark faster and seem to run quieter.

best regards

Don

If this is a K6 system, I presume the ATA100 drive is on a PCI controller. If so, putting an old slow drive on the mobo controller won't hurt the ATA100 at all.

I have an ATA66 on a Maxtor controller and an ATA33 on the motherboard, and the ATA66 performs the same whether the other drive is hooked up or not. I even hooked up an ancient Conner 420-meg drive to it once, and that didn't faze the ATA66 either.

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

I had a maxtor drive sent in ... 3 months and
they sent it back in same condition it was in
SLOW........ 13gig udma 33 halve as fast
as my WD 13gig udma 33.
hope there drives are better now.

P.S. I believe WD is soft read/write compatable
but the maxtor was not.
this may have lead me to believe it was so slow.

soft = right to disk direct no verify.
digital = read sector then right sector then verify sector.
this only effects video work as it is a speed hog
on HDs and video can handle "soft errors" for play back.
