Super 7 systems and PCI graphics.. EDIT: return to AGP-land!

Post by His Royal Majesty King V »

Ok, I suppose this question is natural enough....

Given all the mayhem in terms of compatibility, power draw, and so forth that might well exist for more modern videocards and Super 7 AGP, I think I'll consider PCI.

However, will Super 7 systems more or less work with any and all PCI videocards? Can I get TNT, TNT2, GeForce or whatever cards with however much memory I want and expect trouble-free operation if it's a PCI card?

Or are there issues even then?

-----------------------------------------------------

Well, I'd still like to know the answer to the above. However, I'm back in AGP-land, and using my semi-lowly ATI Xpert@Work.

Here's why I wanted to switch to another card to begin with:

At first, I was using the default drivers for this card (Rage Pro Turbo 3D chipset, essentially based on the Mach64 chipset) that came with Win98, but that had no OpenGL support.

Tried the latest official drivers from ATI's website, version 4.11.2560, but that had an installation bug. Seemed to work, and OpenGL worked in Quake2, but some file or other wouldn't get copied (atidev.dll? sounded important) and the details mentioned a weird sort of error thusly:

--------------------
The following error occurred: 'The path was not found' (error #3).

Setup could not finish copying a file.

Source file: 'D<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> ATI\SUPPORT\w82560en\ATIDEV.DL_'
Destination file: 'C<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATIDEV.001=atidev.dll'
--------------------

However, while the desktop was fine, Quake2 worked in OpenGL, etc., every time I'd try to run my mail program, Eudora Lite v3.01, it would cause a hard lock-up (mouse even froze).

Went to driverguide.com and found another copy of these same drivers, and with no installation bug. However, still had the Eudora problems.

Tried the "alternate" driver from ATI's site, 4.12.2632. Well this seemed fine for Eudora and Quake2 OpenGL, but for whatever reason, DOS stuff at 640x480 VESA mode would be very distorted!! I can't win here!!!

Finally from driverguide.com I found a beta driver apparently somewhere between the above two versions. Seems stable, and Eudora works, OpenGL in Quake2 works, and DOS stuff works at all resolutions! Bonus!

why I have to go to some other website and use some bizarre beta driver to get everything to work right . . . *sigh*

Anyway, I'm once again a happy camper in the land of Super 7!

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 333 @ 350 2.2V
Asus SP97-V rev 1.02, K6-2 400 2.2V
Amptron PM-8600 rev.
