hi k6'ers,

since its my birthday 2day<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)"> and i have some money to spend, ive decided 2 buy a new vid card for my one of my beloved k6-iii+ systems, i am using a rad8500dv on this machine which i am typing on now, and ati's drivers have gotten very poor lately, slow d3d and opengl. i am dualbooting xppro/98se on here with latest updates so it should b smooth, but it isnt. now get this, if i use the latest drivers on win98se, i get smooth d3d/opengl with agp acceleration off, but with it on or off in xp, slow d3d/opengl. if i use an early driver i get problems playing gta3 and other games which the later driivers fix. so im thinking of getting a gf4 4200 with vivo since i do some video editing on here and putting the raddy in the k6-2+ system. oh and btw, i dont want to spend the money on anything else, i wanna have the ultimate ss7 system<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> 2ar15

thanks,

steve

system specs for the epox g5 with k6-iii+ at the moment:

ati radeon 8500dv
768mb ram
2x30gb ibm hd's on pci raid card highpoint 370 controller
usb 2.0 pci card
realtek 8029 network pci card
adaptec aic-7850 pci scsi controller card
creative labs awe64 isa card
philips cdrw 48x/16x/48x
teac cdrom 32x
toshiba dvd 16x
sony mo drive
hp 980cxi printer on usb2
canon canoscan d1250u2 on usb2
creative webcam on motherboard usb
ati remote wonder on motherboard usb

"ati's drivers have gotten very poor lately" I have an ATI card and I must say they have gotten much better lately.

I hate the beat a dead horse but...

if your going to do any upgrade I would have to say get an Athlon XP and mobo, for the price of that video card you could get a 1700+ and mobo witch would give you a system that would out preform the k6 with the 4200.

you still would not have the ult SS7 system if you got a 4200, you would just be wasting money on a system that was outdated 3 years ago.
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvVVVVVVVVVVVV
Athlon XP 1600+@1.82ghz(9x202) V Duron 1.1ghz V pentium 2 350@490
Crucial PC2700 Cas2.5 fastest settings v 384mb pc133 ram V 256mb pc133
Epox 8k9a2+(kt400) V iwill KK266+ V Asus P2B
Radeon 8500@280/340 V matrox g400 V matrox G400
Sound Blaster Live V 20gigs V IBM 13gb
2xWD 20gb 7200 RPM raid 0 setup V 16x10x32 Samsung V Windows XP
1xWD 20gb 7200 RPM V windows XP V No sound
16x10x40 Yamaha burner V 5.1 onboard soundV 32x cd rom
52x Asus CD-ROM V 3com NIC V 3com NIC
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvVVVVVVVVVVVV
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... e>ibLuE at: 1/15/03 3:49:44 pm

Sorry Sandells, the drivers for the high end nvidia cards are even worse on K6 systems than ATI's. Why? Because 12.90 was the last good performing drivers on MVP3 chipset mobos (maybe Ali too). Yes 3DMark2001 runs faster on the newer nvidia drivers, but anything not DX8 runs slower, both D3D and OGL, sometimes significantly slower. I've been running Win2K on my G5 and sometimes stick the Radon 8500 in there. Very smooth and very fast, but I don't play a wide variety of games on it.

blue,

yes i agree with what you're saying, i'm just holding off until the new AMD Barton chips arrive then i'll upgrade the whole system, motherboard, cpu, ddr memory, etc... it'll be my first experience of a non-ss7 system<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

georgep,

do you think i should get a higher clocked radeon then? i was looking for an aiw 8500 without the firewire ports, since that card is clocked at 275/275? would that give me better performance? if so, where can i buy one online that ships internationally? remember this card i'm buying now will be going in my new system when i build it. also on my k6-iii+/gf3/ali v system i get pretty smooth performance when using the 42.01 drivers on win98se playing ms cfs3 which is a very vid card/cpu-dependant game, which wont run on my uncles p3/tnt2 system, heh<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

thanks,

steve

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... andells at: 1/16/03 5:44:52 am

Barton's supposed to be shipping from AMD on Feb. 7, which means we might be able to buy one by mid-March. Wish they'd hurry up with it...with that 512K L2 cache it should be a killer in real-world use. Then I'll just have to justify it to myself that I need more speed than what I have now. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

If you are going to buy it for a future system then wait for the system. The graphics card industry moves faster than the CPU industry. Plus NV30 will be out. Even if your not buying it, you are waiting for it's wake. All current inferior cards will get a price cut.

Can you say 9500? <G> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Sandells,

I doubt that the higher clocked Radeon will be faster with your K6 rig. I'm not sure but I think there has to be some problem with your setup. Running Win2K at 618 MHz, with a retail Radeon 8500 clocked at 290/290, I got 3660 in 3DMark2001. That's with default settings in the drivers and 3DMark. At 600 MHz and 275/275 I get about 3400. I can't remember what you got with your system but I thought it was considerably less. Q3 Demo1 gets about 65 fps at HQ from 640x480 to 1280x1024. Maybe it's all the stuff you got on your system that I don't have on mine (actually my girlfriend thinks its hers, heh) that is stealing resources.
