got my radeon 9700, but.....

Post by Sandells »

hi guys,

got my radeon 9700 (powercolor evil commando 2 gold gamers pack), but it locks my pc when doing any 3D Acceleration in games both in Direct X and OpenGL. Also the pc locks when watching any DVD's in PowerDVD with hardware acceleration enabled, my 8500dv had no problems. this is just in xp it's happening, in win98se i can play any game without it locking up, apart from 3DMark2001SE crashing back to the desktop when starting to do the nature test. i am using the cat 3.1's by ati in both os's, i haven't tried the powered by drivers yet.

also heres another quirk, when i disabled the secondary output on the card in xp, it started to play 4x4 Evo2 in Direct3D and after about a minute of running the intro screens, the pc shut itself off completely in xp and would not power back up unless i got my brother to unplug the mains power cable from the psu, and then plug it back in and the pc would boot. playing 4x4 in win98se works flawlessly, so i'm thinking that my el cheapo Q-TEC 550W PSU which i got off e-bay for £35 isn't providing enough amps on the 3.3v rail, so i'm getting an Enermax 550W PSU which provides 36amps on the same rail versus 20amps for the Q-TEC PSU.

Steve

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... andells at: 2/18/03 8:18:12 am

With Catalyst 3.1, 3DMark2001 crashes also, it never crashed with Catalyst 3.0. Good luck Sandells.

I got a 9500 Pro for my high end rig, so the 8500 is going permanantly in my G5. But I'm going to try out the 9500 on the G5 first, just to see how it goes.

I've been running an 8500 (64mb, bba) for a while with Cat2.2. Any time I've tried using anything newer (2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 3.0, 3.1) I get consistant random lockups; anywhere from hitting ESC at the logon to testing w/ 3dmark2001SE. It either locks up before game 4 or not at all (though thats only happened twice, last night, testing disabling the Live card and USB mouse drivers, but not consistantly).
Those who haven't gotten their card to work might try the 2.2, 2.3, or 2.4 as I've read various people say only specific versions work for them.

System...
Win98SE, DX8.1, Asus P5A-B, latest BIOS
Radeon 8500 64mb BBA
256mb PC133 CL2, K6-2+ 450 @ 518
SB Live! BIOS settings (AGP turbo, aperture, frame buffer, etc), smartgart on/off, driver install w/ and w/o setup, different AGP settings (1X, 2X, 'safe mode' in the AGP CP), AGP drivers (1.5X, 1.6X, 1.7X, & 1.90), memory timings, vid card underclocking (250/250), FSB underclocking, Windows & ALi 3.56 IDE drivers, disable SB Live DOS emulation, disable SB Live card, disable USB mouse drivers, AA on/off, AF on/off, and on and on...
Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it? I need Cat2.3 or newer for the Ghost Recon fix. Is XP my only hope?

Radeon 8500/9100 in Socket 7

Post by pedrogad »

The plot thickens! Following initial problems with the Radeon in my GA-5aa, I successfully installed the card in my son's GA-5ax system. It's run for a couple of days without a hitch, and even gets through 3D2001 without problems.

I noticed the Radeon software still changed the Ali AGP Center from GAT 1 to GAT 2, but for once that hasn't caused a problem. Previously GAT 2 was a no-no for both our systems.

I've been analysing the possible differences in the two systems, trying to see why the Radeon card has been initially problematic in mine. My son's m/b is the ATX version of mine, but basically the same. However he is running ME and has a larger power supply. His AGP aperture is set at 64mb whereas mine is set at 128mb in BIOS. That's about it.

Apart from that, I have a better system (I think!), with a 3+/550 (runs 600 easy) against his 2+/500 running at 550. I have 224mb PC100 CAS 2, against his 192mb, so if I can get this bloody card running in mine I should just about beat his poxy 2700 points in 3D2001!

One thing I didn't do this time was mess about with drivers. This time I just used the Sapphire CD first, and the drivers went in a treat (along with a load of multimedia crap). These drivers are 4.13.01.9072 which I think are Cat 2.5's ??

Anyway, I'll leave the card in his computer for a few more day's monitoring, and then try again in mine. Keep you posted.

Radeon 9100 update

Post by pedrogad »

After a couple of days of intensive testing in my Ga5-aa m/b (yeah I know it's sad to spend weekends like this!), I have come to the conclusion that this card is more suited to either a bigger power supply (my AT psu is only 200w), or maybe it prefers ME to my W98SE? Using the Cat 2.5's off the Sapphire installation CD did help, but there were still lockups and even totally blank screens (bit unnerving when the pc fans are still running). I did get through all the 3D2001 tests a few times, and with my K6-3+/550 @ 600, managed to exceed 3000 points. However the stability of the card in my system was a bit worrying at times, and I never got beyond Mad Onion to test any actual games. I spent hours fiddling with the settings, and the ATI Smartgart too. It would be good to find something to override the GAT 2 setting in the AGPCC, but the Radeon insists on this!

The Radeon is now back again in one of my boy's systems, which has the ATX version of my Ali V m/b (Ga5-ax). Apart from a very occasional freeze in 3D2001, it seems to run pretty reliably. His o/s is ME and his system has a 300w power supply, so I can only put the difference down to that, unless my computer has some conflicting software lurking inside? Both systems have previously used GF2Ti cards.

I reckon this is a good card for SS7 though, if only I could get the bugger to run properly in my own setup! The card doesn't seem quite so cpu dependent as some other cards. It's half-tempting to try a GF3, but the later Nvidia drivers are pretty crap with the older chipsets. Still, can't win 'em all!

found the problem....

AGP Acceleration has to be disabled for this card to work in xp doing any 3D Games. hmmmm...... i wonder if it has anything to do with the VIA AGP drivers? i've tried the xp standard ones and the 4.40 driver, same result. funny thing is though the ATI DX9 screensaver works perfectly with AGP Acceleration enabled.

Steve

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... andells at: 2/24/03 3:26:31 pm

CTU cockup?

Post by pedrogad »

This radeon 8500/9100 saga in SS7 is getting to be quite diverse!

I'm like a dog with a bone.......and am still puzzling why a Rad 9100 works great in a GA5-ax (admittedly with a 300w psu and ME), but is too glitchy in a GA5-aa.

Both systems are running Rom M's CTU at startup, and I forgot to reset them both when the Rad was installed. It didn't seem to affect one system however. Guess who's ...not mine! Anyway the Write Combining feature allocates different memory addresses for the Rad. My question is whether the old GF2Ti memory addresses for MTRR0 and MTRR1 would seriously glitch the Radeon?? This error of mine in not resetting the CTU didn't seem to matter with the ATX system, but I'm wondering what the general implications are?

If anyone thinks this is significant, I'll renew my enthusiasm once again to re-try the Rad in my Ga5-aa system, but this time with the CTU reset with the correct WC parameters.

I'm not sure about your situation, but I had a V4 4500 in my TX97-XE, with CTU enabling Write Combine. When I replaced it with a GF2 MX400 without resetting CTU, it would lockup in just about any 3D game. Disabled Write Combine and everything was okay.

Sandells, I temporarily put my 9500 Pro in my G5 to get the K6-x 3DMark crown back. It worked fine in the benchmark and games in Win2K. AGP acceleration is enabled.

Steve, The G5 has Catalyst 2.5 drivers. I recently reinstalled Win2K on the G5 with ACPI disabled (was trying to get rid of strange USB problem). However, before the reinstall with ACPI enabled, the 8500 was working fine, once again, with Catalyst 2.5.

GAT modes

Post by jwhickman »

My AladdinV system always reports GAT mode 0 w/ my 8500; have you tried manually setting different modes? I've got AGP driver 1.90 (1.91 only seems to add AGP 8X support) and AGPCC 1.40. I run it currently in Normal mode; Turbo (which sets GAT mode 2) didn't work when last I tried it, but I'm going to do some more testing in Manual mode tonight w/ the GAT mode and delay timers. The values are set in the registry at HKLM/software/ali/agpcc or similar.
