FAO: His Royal Majesty King V or anyone else who can help!

Post by BadAss »

Hello! I have an FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036 motherboard, and I'm seeking help/advice! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Basically, I've just dug it out, replaced some parts (HDD, Graphics Card) and installed Windows 2000 on it. When I goto reboot, it would just present the "You can now switch off your computer" screen. I turned on APM in Power Management, and now instead of that, it reboots rather than shutting down. It's an ATX card (as I'm sure you know) and PSU, so it should be able to turn itself off... I'm wondering if you ever came across this problem? I haven't updated the BIOS... I once tried, but it ****ed up, and just presented me with a screen of random coloured ASCII characters rather than posting, so I'm not in any hurry to Flash the BIOS again unless that is the fix, and you can point me to the relevant BIOS version needed to do so...

Any help will be much apreciated!

Gaz

Hm, that's definitely a strange one, although I've never used Win 2000. I've also got power management enabled, and set them to custom settings. The only fluke is that I've got a bit of NAT software running that has the side-effect of preventing the system from going on Standby . . but if I disable it, standby gives me problems.

I'm running Win98 lite though.

What do you have for the following:

CPU type and speed?
BIOS version?
Hard drive size?
Video card?
RAM (amount, manufacturer of DIMMS, CL rating, etc)?

--------------------
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 450AFX @ 500 2.2V

Acer Quasi-proprietary Mid-Tower with P-II 266

is the mobo and AT/ATX or just AT? I had the same problem with soyo 5ehm, it had to do with the bios not supporting the power functions ACPI or something like that

I have some of my settings a little different.

Try
SDRAM Cycle Length: 2 (I guess for CAS 2 memory)
SDRAM Bank Interleave: 4 bank

These settings work for me.

The only other thing that occurs to me is that the FIC PA-2013 seems to be really cranky about videocards. I had to stick with ATI as no Nvidia card seemed to want to behave properly, and I'd used:

Nvidia VantaLT AGP 8MB
TNT2 PCI 32MB
Riva128 AGP 4MB
Riva128 PCI 4MB

None of them were at all stable on my board, and that PCI Riva128 worked fine on my old Dell P133!!

It's possible I suppose that the motherboard just doesn't like the Voodoo Banshee. I couldn't say for sure though. I *do* know that FIC recommends against Voodoo 3 based cards.

Admittedly your BIOS is dated, though I don't know if that would cause any issues or not. I do know that there was a hard drive size limit with older BIOSes, but I don't know how much of a limit. The <a href="http://www.fic.com.tw/support/motherboa ...
for the PA-2013 shows a question where someone upgraded from an 8GB drive to a 40GB and had problems, and recommends going to the JI4333 beta BIOS (the JI4330 and JI4333 allow use of K6-2+ and K6-III+ processors as well), which I've used on both my FIC boards with no trouble. So I guess it's *possible* that the 20GB hard drive might have something to do with it. I do generally recommend going with the latest BIOS, but I can understand the hesitation given your past experience.

Do you have a copy of Windows 98 around? I figure you can try to do an install of that and see if it fixes the problem or of the problem still remains, to see if the OS you were using has issues with the board for whatever reason.

I'm really kind of stabbing in the dark here though.

Hope I've offered some help/guidance.
--------------------
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 450AFX @ 500 2.2V

Acer Quasi-proprietary Mid-Tower with P-II 266

I could never get the on-off thing to work with my VA503+. I tried everything. I just lived with it.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

Funny that you mention it, but this graphics card is the only one that I've got going stable. My Voodoo3 AGP just locked the PC up after about a minute, my 8mb AGP Intel card locked it up after about five minutes, and every PCI graphics card I have would lock it up after a random amount of time in the top PCI slot, but this seems to be fine in the second. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> As someone else said though, I'd rather have to turn it off than use Win98 <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> Was just hoping there might be a common/easy fix. Upgrading the BIOS is still an option, but I don't know which version is the most up to date for the board... any clues? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> I know the HDD is ok, it's HDDs of size 30gb or more that cause problems, and you can usually just clip them anyway, but I don't need to do that so \o/

Well, I was really suggesting Win98 just for testing purposes. If for whatever reason Win98 worked correctly but not Win 2000, then we could eliminate bogus hardware as the issue and have it definitely narrowed down to software/drivers.

Though I still use Win98 lite . . and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon.

That said, latest BIOS versions are:

Official: <a href="http://www.fic.com.tw/support/motherboa ... dated 4/8/2000

Beta, supports K6-2+ and K6-III+: <a href="http://www.fic.com.tw/support/motherboa ... (the question in the FAQ is dated 3/27/2001)

Also, I do recall reading somewhere in the FAQ that any Intel AGP videocard is going to give this chipset some trouble. So I'd definitely avoid that videocard! But the Voodoo Banshee should in theory work fine.

I tried those RAM settings and they didn't make a difference. I've also updated the BIOS to JI438 and that hasn't made a difference either. Oh well <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Sorry to hear that....

Only other thing I could think of is that it's somehow indirectly video-driver related.

It wasn't with that type of motherboard or with that type of videocard, but I do know that I had a problem with a system hanging whenever I tried to do a shutdown. Turned out that the drivers for the videocard were somehow at issue.

But it was an S3-based videocard, and a Baby AT motherboard. I know it's not much help, but I figure it might possibly be something....

--------------------
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 450AFX @ 500 2.2V

Acer Quasi-proprietary Mid-Tower with P-II 266
