Where does K6 Plus go from here?

I'd like to hear more of what you've got in mind for the website? I thought the anniversary article was great, by the way!

Good question!

Post by Mr Toastz »

Well, seeing most of us (myself NOT included) have embraced Athlons, it would be nice to see some reviews of Athy chips and boards, with a K6 perspective.

I certainly plan on doing this when I finally make the Athy jump. We are here to share our knowledge of K6-x, but we also need keep up to date with stuff of interest to computer users in general.

I'm interested in the answer to this question as well. What does everyone else think?

How about a name revision?

Post by allans2k »

Maybe a slight revision of name is in order? Perhaps, K6Plus and Beyond?

K6Plus and Beyond....Hmm

Almost has an "Outer Limits" flavor to it (you know, like the OLD American T.V. Show of the 1960's). If you don't know exactly what I mean then just stop by our Chat room on a Friday night, <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> .

It would be appropriate. Socket 7 Classics- Blazing the Trailing Edge

Post by mulvihill »

I'd like to see K6plus continue "as is" as part of a larger site dedicated to classic chips and boards. Then those of us who want to pay tribute to or resource the VA-503+ or the P55T2P4 (jump in here) would have a place to howl.
I think there'll be a need for K6plus for a long time.
We could then move on to include socket A classics. I think we could safely skip Slot A.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/umulvihill.sho ... lvihill at: 7/7/02 10:55:39 am

Personally sometimes I don't know why I even try... this is a great site that should get more attention than it does. Unfortunately due to the fact that this is a volunteer effort, one can't expect everything...

I'll keep writing articles when I can, but with my current situation and other commitments I can't promise much anytime soon.

I should point out that almost everything I have done since November has been done remotely (including checking my email). Most people have the luxury of doing this on their own computer, but my situation is not allowing this. Fortunately I do have a folder on one of the computers here at work (to store artwork in) but all the webpage work, etc. that I do is done pretty much on the fly. The fact I am able to get work done in this manner means that I have to work twice as hard in some cases, which also means that I have higher expectations of other people's ability to do things than is probably reasonable.

Nohr and AZK6er have been doing a lot more for this site lately than I ever did, but their focus is news which is as it should be. There are other aspects that concern me.

I've been unable to purchase an Abit NForce for about 4 months now, and I have my reasons for choosing that particular board (top end performance is not #1 on my list). but until my finances allow me to purchase that indulgence (along with a case, P/S, ram, hard drive, etc), I am without Socket A, and hence can't review/share my experiences. In my opinion, until we start 'hanging with the big boys' again and make an active effort to review/share our socket A experience, as well as informing them when we do write articles...

Socket 7 is pretty much obsolete. It is very important that we keep this site running so that those of us that like our SS7's, or basically still use them because of various reasons, have a place to call home. This site provides SS7'ers a database and knowledge pool to draw from that many other sites lack. But in order to keep those with the key knowledge here at our site, as well as build our community, we need to give something the Socket A users need.

Another ongoing concern of mine is the amount of knowledge that is shared in our chat room that never makes it to this forum. This has been the case since day one of this site, and will be the case years from now. All I can ask is that when people in chat learn something in chat, that they consider sharing their knowledge here in the forum for others to draw upon.

I was very suprised that jsc1973 wrote the review for the hard drive he won. We never asked for this, and certainly did not expect it. Thanks again! Note that he benched his drive on an Athy, not a SS7, which I personally was very happy to see. Besides, we have seen the results of similar situations already (my ATA100 drive is only marginally, if any, better than the ATA66 drive it replaced on my SS7, because of the limitations of the board), so this wasn't really necessary.

Well, apologies for the long post. When I am in a more positive mood again I will apply myself to this issue more constructively.

Mr Toastz

I'm a relative newcomer to this site, but I feel impelled to come in on your side, Mr Toastz.

To start, you and the other volunteers have built a great site that is always well worth a visit so, despite any misgivings you might have, the effort has definitely been and continues to be worthwhile.

I'm sure that everyone recognises the common bond. K6 is and has been a part of our lives. It seems to me that the this almost emotional attachment leads to the onward path being to the Duron/Athlon family. This is what marks out our path into the future - the continuing devotion to K6/SS7 and the adoption of the logical "next generation" K6 plus. And it also looks as if most of our systems we built ourselves.

Can I suggest that this marks us out from the "common herd" who just go out and buy an Athlon-based package because they've read good reviews or because the retailer had a special deal that week?

You're right, Mr Toastz, there is a need, somehow, to cover both the SS7 and the Socket A fronts. I'm afraid I can't offer the definitive answer at this time, but I'll mull it over for a while longer. What I do feel instinctively is that the solution must encompass the ties that we continue to have - even if some of us don't actually run a K6 any more.

In the mean time (without in any way belittling the contribution made by everyone else on this site), your efforts are well appreciated. I know that when you positive mood comes along we'll see some positive steps springing out of it.

K6PLus has been a roaring success!

Post by allans2k »

K6Plus has been a success by any standard. You've got a small but faithful core of followers. The site has made progress and is quite presentable. It's not perfect, but that gives you something to work for! Mr T is far too hard on himself and others. Yeah, as Socket 7 recedes futher in the rearview mirror, a site dedicated to those who continue with their present machines can certainly use a resource such as K6 Plus. I hope you can dream up new angles to remain current. I'd also be interested to know where everyone who contributes to the site hails from?

Your comments are most appreciated!

I'm just frustrated because I can't tweak & report (something I used to do regularly back in the AMDZone days). My mobile desktop/gaming rig has been a godsend, as I have that SFC mod I am busily at work on.

Someone who would make it their mission in life to handle site PR would go a long way to making me happier. I guess I will just have to find a way to do this regularly without any bookmarks or 'address book', seeing that no one else is up to the challenge.

We've had some real good articles lately IMHO and they to be promoted!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/umrtoastz.show ... uage=EN>Mr Toastz at: 7/16/02 12:06:07 am
