if you pair this cpu with an ati (matrox, nvidia) AND use appropriate dvd-software (from ati ....) then you will have no problems with playing dvds.

re divx: I think this depends on a lot of technical divx parameters used during the encoding process whether you can "enjoy" watching this type of movies. but I don't know for sure.

You could try it, but...

I wouldn't count on it. I tried everything in the book to get smooth DVD with both nVidia and ATI hardware. No luck. I don't think a K6-anything can handle without serious hardware assist.

I've tried it with a regular 550, and a K6-III+ 500. Always a little choppy, irritating.

You should be able to get smooth DVD w/ no sweat. I only ever had problems w/ non plus K6-2s. Even then given an FIC w/ 1 Meg cache & a K6-2 500 they would play ok if the HDD wasn't too badly fragged.

i'm running win98se + sp system is nice and snappy so don't think i'll bother with winxp. haven't tested dvd playback yet been busy.. plus turns out the second ide chan on the mobo is rooted.. so i've had my eyes on eday waiting for a top of the line socket 7 board at the right price.
