IBM Aptiva 450MHz AMD

Post by Tashammer »

The question that springs to mind most readily is, of course, help please.

IBM Aptiva AMD 3D Now! 450MHz Model 2199
CPU Type: AMD K6-2, 450 MHz (4.5 x 100)
Motherboard Name: Unknown
Motherboard Chipset: SiS 530
System Memory: 59 MB (SDRAM)
BIOS Type: Award Modular (08/04/99)
Display: Video Adapter SiS 530/620 (4 MB)
3D Accelerator: SiS 86C306
Monitor: Compaq 7500 [17" CRT] (12364230482821)

Multimedia:
Audio Adapter: ESS Technology ES1938/ES1941/ES1946 Solo-1(E) Sound Card

Storage:
IDE Controller: SiS PCI IDE Controller
Floppy Drive: Floppy disk drive
Disk Drive: WDC AC310200R (9 GB, IDE)
Optical Drive: LITEON CD-ROM LTN403 (40x CD-ROM)
SMART Hard Disks Status: OK

As you can see, i added a 10GB WD drive, plus a 17" monitor, and a D-Link Network card..

But when i came to upgrade the memory, it wouldn't.
i took out the 64MB stick and replaced it with a new 128MB Kingston KVR133X64C3/128 chip to no effect.

After digging around i found that there was a BIOS update: installed that ok.

Old BIOS
Award Software International, Inc.
Ver.: BTPEN05A

NEW BIOS
Ver.: BTPEN10A

Flashed that ok.

Still wouldn't see the 128MB RAM

How do i get the little machine to see the RAM?

P.S. Are IBM/Lennovo ashamed or shy about the above machine. They seem to nearly bypass 2199 altogether.

KVR133X64C3/128 - "The components on this module include four 16M x 16-bit(4M x 16-bit x 4 Bank) PC133 SDRAM in TSOP packages."

SiS 530 - 16Mbit, 64Mbit Technology

128MB/4 chips=32MB per chip*8MB/Mbit=256Mbit per chip=won't work on your system :(

128MB/16 chips=8MB per chip*8MB/Mbit=64Mbit per chip=will work on your system :D

Go get the correct module for your system.

To be completely honest, it's hard finding details on most IBM systems in the era, mine was purchased in bulk by an Australian Bank (and their employees as a package deal), all of which AFAIK were the K62-500 series 2187 :)

I don't know about K6+ series processors Bali... but it'll defintely run a K62-550 or OC'ed K62 @ 600Mhz :D

A manual? good luck, I wasn't able to locate one when I was looking... if you have any specific setting question, either PM me or post your query ;)
