Recommendations for free video-editing software?

I don't need anything particularly sophisticated.

However, my digital camera has a kind of neat feature in that it can record video clips, which it does in AVI format.

When I play them back on the camera's LCD screen, they look just fine. But if I copy the AVI to my PC, it comes out extremely dark.

The Windows Movie Maker software that comes with XP, as far as I've been able to figure out, just allows for sound editing, creating and swapping clips, etc. I definitely need to be able to also brighten the video clip, probably sharpen it, and probably convert from AVI to MPG or possibly other formats.

Anyone have anything they personally like and recommend?

I can do that w/ DVDs by way of Power DVD; but for anything else, I have do the frames one at a time w/ Corel. Gets ok results; but very very tedious.

SUPER (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer)
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
is a new freeware utility that converts virtually all video and audio formats. It's not an editor as such like Pinnacle Studio but its ability to convert any number of video files exceeds that of any payware app.
The author will take you on a tour through 3 or 4 pages before you actually get to download the file so be patient.
