I have the exact same problem, either in w2k and xp, I have that crash in d3d both with a fx5200 and a vanta pci (so no agp vs pci problem here). 56.72's are a no go for me, I haven't tried other 56.xx, but later 6x,7x and 8x. The latest that work for me are 53.01's. I have no problem with the older 4x.xx series.
I'm using 4.43's, but had the same problem with the latest 5.0xs.

I have similar problems with my GF4-MX460 on my GA-5AX rev. 5.2 dual-boot system (NT4, Windows 2000 pro).

NT4 uses driver 77.72 and I get a blue screen with nv4_disp.dll given as being the culprit. these blue screens only occur when I overclock the fsb and sharp memory timings applied. I also have problems to run open-gl applications (application aborts after complaining about memory-read errors). Despite these problems I keep this driver because it gives me good dvd-performance.

windows 2000 shows the problem you mention namely abnormal slow open-gl performance (1 frame every 2 to 3 seconds). the driver installed is version 81.xx because it too gives me best dvd-performance. to solve the poor open-gl problem I tried to re-install ali's agp-driver (1.83) but that did not help.

since this machine is not used to play games I can live with these problems but of course a solution to these problems would not hurt either.

hello,

i have a very similar problem.
my pc config is the following:
VIA MVP3 MoBo with an AMD K6-2 CPU @ 450 MHz (no overclocking),
2x128 MB SDRAM, and GForce MX440 64MB.
OS: XP SP2 with all updates,

I get the same blue screen with nv4_disp.dll with all D3D apps. The interesting thing is that when I run DXDiag, the Direct7 test runs successfully, and at the next step, at DirectX 8 test it crashes. If i skip D8 test and run D9 test, it also crashes.
I tried a lot of stuff, underclocking cpu and ram, re-setting BIOS, i have a freash-and-clean SP2 and nothing helps. :/

Where's the problem?? MVP3 don't love NVidia?

Please tell me if you have any ideas fixing the problem. Can you also help me find these things?:
- Via 4-in-1 drivers (i have v4.32)
- Old NVidia Drivers that might work
- a BIOS update for MVP3 MoBo

thanx,
levidos

levidos,

what driver version are you currently using for your mx440? I would suggest you try version 28.32. it is an whql-certified driver and is the first so for supporting the mx420/440/460 model. it is an old one, sure, but these old drivers were optimized for the games back then (newer games are written for much stronger cpus and graphic cards and to get the most out of newer games), so you get the best performance for your k6-machine. for xp-2k nvidia drivers go here. the site's language is german, but that should pose no problem ... it has drivers back to 2001 ....

their main page for downloading a lot of helpful stuff (tweakers, overclocking, directx-uninstallation etc) is here.

for via-drivers you might find something here you can always google for "via drivers" ....

regarding bios for your mainboard: whats the brand and modell?

I'm using the Omega nvidia 1.6693 performance driver (based on the 66.93 driver) with a nVidia Ti4600 mated with my EPoX MVP3G5 and using WinXP as the OS. Seems OK...

Oops - I'm using the Omega 1.5672
EP-MVP3G2 Rev 1.0 (8/6/01 BIOS) -- K6-2+ 550ACZ @ 618MHz (103MHz FSB) 640MB PC100

EP-MVP3G5 Rev1.4 (8/6/01 BIOS) -- K6III+ 500ANZ @ various MHz

Just to add, more than a year ago I settled on 44.03's (these were the fastest nv drivers for older cards, but cheated a lot on benchmarks as 3dM2k1, hence their bad reputation, latest creative had version 44.04 of these) or 45.23's (fixed previous issues, slower performance, at their time were regarded very stable drivers) which seem to have the most balanced performance on d3d (max8) and opengl (max8, q1, q3) being both usable. Later drivers until 53.01s would cause stutters on glq1 after some time.
This with an fx5200 128mb 64bit agp, vanta LT 64bit 32MB pci and riva tnt 128bit 16MB agp.

Both can be found on NV driver archive (just select latest and browse trough 1st mirror, which is their ftp, or click the link on the left for their http archive).

Gl all!
